Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) cause the overwhelming majority of community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTI) worldwide. A particularly problematic aspect of UPEC-associated UTI is the rate of recurrent infections- one in four UTIs will recur within six months of the initial infection.
