In Vitro Host-Cell Susceptibility to Usutu Virus

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2005
We investigated the susceptibility to Usutu virus (Flavivirus) of 13 permanent cell lines, 3 primary cell cultures, and chicken embryos. Vero, PK-15, and goose embryo fibroblast cells developed cytopathic effects; however, viral multiplication was ...

Molecular and Serological Screening of West Nile and Usutu Virus in Birds and Humans: A Sentinel Study in Finland. [PDF]

open access: yesVet Med Sci
We developed sensitive real‐time PCR assays for West Nile virus and Usutu virus to screen bird and human samples in Finland. Although no positive samples were detected, active migratory flyways and recent cases in neighbouring countries highlight the risk of future introduction and the need for continued surveillance.

Severe Usutu Virus Encephalitis Treated With Corticosteroids: A Case Report. [PDF]

open access: yesCase Rep Infect Dis
Usutu virus (USUV) is a neurotropic flavivirus, phylogenetically related to West Nile virus (WNV), maintained in the environment through a bird‐to‐mosquito transmission cycle, with humans and other animals occasionally becoming infected. In recent years, different cases of human infections have been reported concomitantly with increased viral ...

Usutu Virus in Bats, Germany, 2013

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2014
To the Editor: Usutu virus (USUV) is an arthropod-borne flavivirus that belongs to the Japanese encephalitis serocomplex (1). USUV circulates between ornithophilic mosquito vectors (mainly Culex spp. mosquitoes) and avian amplification hosts (2). Migratory birds play a key role in the introduction of USUV into new areas (3).
