Infection with Usutu virus induces an autophagic response in mammalian cells. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2013
Usutu virus (USUV) is an African mosquito-borne flavivirus closely related to West Nile virus and Japanese encephalitis virus, which host range includes mainly mosquitoes and birds, although infections in humans have been also documented, thus warning ...

Image_4_A comprehensive analysis of Usutu virus (USUV) genomes revealed lineage-specific codon usage patterns and host adaptations.JPEG

open access: yes, 2023
The Usutu virus (USUV) is an emerging arbovirus virus maintained in the environment of Afro-Eurasia via a bird-mosquito-bird enzootic cycle and sporadically infected other vertebrates.

A Focus on Natural Autophagy Modulators as Potential Host‐Directed Weapons Against Emerging and Re‐Emerging Viruses

open access: yesMedicinal Research Reviews, Volume 45, Issue 6, Page 1850-1882, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Autophagy is a highly conserved intracellular process involved in maintaining homeostasis and in the degradation of damaged organelles and external pathogens. Nature provides complex and varied reservoirs of scaffolds and chemical entities that may have a pivotal role in the search for new therapeutic leads.

A Pyrido‐Quinoxaline Derivative That Downregulates Reticulon 3 Protein Exhibits Potent Antiviral Activity Against Zika Virus

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, Volume 97, Issue 9, September 2025.
ABSTRACT In the wake of the COVID‐19 pandemic, awareness of emerging pathogens has significantly increased, prompting greater investment in research and preparedness. In this context, arboviral diseases are recognized as unmet medical challenges due to their rapid spread. Notably, the geographical range of several flaviviral diseases is expanding: Zika

Comparative Usutu and West Nile virus transmission potential by local Culex pipiens mosquitoes in north-western Europe

open access: yesOne Health, 2015
Originating from Africa, Usutu virus (USUV) first emerged in Europe in 2001. This mosquito-borne flavivirus caused high mortality rates in its bird reservoirs, which strongly resembled the introduction of West Nile virus (WNV) in 1999 in the United ...

Host‐feeding preferences of Culex pipiens and its potential significance for flavivirus transmission in the Camargue, France

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 39, Issue 3, Page 614-625, September 2025.
We identified Culex pipiens bloodmeals at the species level in natural, agricultural and peri‐urban habitats and calculated host preferences based on forage ratios. This analysis showed Passeriformes, and in particular Columba livia, Passer montanus and Turdus sp., to be the preferred Cx. pipiens hosts.

Ixodes ricinus as potential vector for Usutu virus.

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases
Usutu virus (USUV) is an emerging flavivirus that is maintained in an enzootic cycle with mosquitoes as vectors and birds as amplifying hosts. In Europe, the virus has caused mass mortality of wild birds, mainly among Common Blackbird (Turdus merula ...

Surveillance of Tick‐Borne Encephalitis Virus—Comparison of Vaccination‐ and Infection‐Induced Seroprevalences in Lower Bavaria, Germany

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, Volume 97, Issue 8, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Tick‐borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is an emerging flavivirus in Europe and Asia, causing severe neurological disease in humans. Recent advances in serological diagnostics, in particular the detection of antibodies against the nonstructural protein 1 (NS1), enable epidemiological research by differentiation of vaccine‐ and infection‐induced ...

Usutu virus NS4A induces autophagy and is targeted by the selective autophagy receptor p62/SQSTM1 for degradation

open access: yesVirology Journal
Usutu virus (USUV) is an emerging orthoflavivirus, which mainly affects birds but in rare cases can cause severe neuroinvasive disease in humans. The virus relies on a multitude of host cell proteins, molecules and cellular processes for its replication,
