Zika Virus Infection during Pregnancy and Effects on Early Childhood Development, French Polynesia, 2013–2016

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2018
Congenital Zika virus syndrome consists of a large spectrum of neurologic abnormalities seen in infants infected with Zika virus in utero. However, little is known about the effects of Zika virus intrauterine infection on the neurocognitive development ...

Whole-Blood Testing for Diagnosis of Acute Zika Virus Infections in Routine Diagnostic Setting

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2019
We evaluated the benefit of whole blood versus plasma to detect acute Zika virus infections. Comparison of Zika virus quantitative reverse transcription PCR results in single timepoint whole blood–plasma pairs from 227 patients with suspected Zika virus ...

Clinical, Neuroimaging and Video Electroencephalography Findings in Children With Congenital Zika Syndrome: An Analysis From a Neurorehabilitation Centre. [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Dev Neurosci
Children with congenital Zika syndrome followed at a neurorehabilitation centre demonstrated severe neurological impairment characterized by microcephaly, cortical malformations, intracranial calcifications and multifocal epileptiform activity. Integrated clinical, neuroimaging and video‐electroencephalographic (EEG) findings highlight the extensive ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Use of Urea Wash ELISA to Distinguish Zika and Dengue Virus Infections

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2018
Serologic testing remains crucial for Zika virus diagnosis. We found that urea wash in a Zika virus nonstructural protein 1 IgG ELISA distinguishes secondary dengue virus infection from Zika virus infection with previous dengue (sensitivity 87.5 ...

Advanced 3D Platforms for Modeling CNS Neuroinflammation: Cell Integration, Techniques, and Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review summarizes the roles of key central nervous system cell types, the extracellular matrix, and the blood‐brain barrier in neuroinflammation, and their integration into diverse 3D culture systems. It examines major incorporation strategies, including direct co‐culture, hydrogel encapsulation, transwell migration assays, and bioprinting ...

Transmission of Zika virus by dendritic cell subsets in skin and vaginal mucosa

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2023
Zika virus is a member of the Flaviviridae family that has caused recent outbreaks associated with neurological malformations. Transmission of Zika virus occurs primarily via mosquito bite but also via sexual contact. Dendritic cells (DCs) and Langerhans
