A Theoretical Analysis of Vacuum Arc Thruster and Vacuum Arc Ion Thruster Performance

IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science, 2008
Thrusters that exploit vacuum arc discharges to produce high-velocity plasma jets directly or as sources of plasma that is subsequently accelerated electrostatically have been proposed or are currently under development. Vacuum arc discharges exhibit certain regularities in their behavior that allow the performance of these thrusters to be described by

Influence of the pulsed AMF arc control on the vacuum arc and post arc characteristic in vacuum interrupters

2017 4th International Conference on Electric Power Equipment - Switching Technology (ICEPE-ST), 2017
The paper investigates the pulsed AMF arc control on the vacuum arc and the post arc characteristic to reveal the mechanism of AMF arc control in different control time and find the proper AMF arc control. The pulsed AMF control system is designed and the pulse width is adjusting from 1.5ms to 10ms.

Arcing voltage of the metal vapour vacuum arc

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 1984
Arcing voltage characteristics of metal vapour arcs in vacuum for seven metals (copper, aluminium, tin, magnesium, zinc, cadmium and bismuth) of high purity and low gas content have been investigated. These metals cover a fairly wide range of thermophysical parameters.

Cathode Erosion in Vacuum Arcs and Unipolar Arcs

Beiträge aus der Plasmaphysik, 1981
AbstractThe cathode spots from vacuum arcs on 316 stainless steel are compared with the tracks found on the same material after exposure to the plasma of the tokamak TFR 600. Further the erosion yields of vacuum arc cathodes of 316 stainless steel and titanium are determined from experiments and the measured values are compared with theoretical ...

Retrograde arc spot motion in vacuum

Proceedings ISDEIV. 19th International Symposium on Discharges and Electrical Insulation in Vacuum (Cat. No.00CH37041), 2002
Experiments are reported on the retrograde arc spot motion on copper cathodes in vacuum in the presence of a magnetic field. The spots are imaged with time and space resolution of

The vacuum arc

1994
Since the vacuum arc is the key element in the vacuum interrupter, some knowledge of its structure and behaviour is essential to understanding the operation of vacuum switchgear. The name vacuum arc is really incorrect, indeed, it is a contradiction. As Ecker points out 'If there is a vacuum there is no arc, and if there is an arc there is no vacuum ...

Vacuum arcs and switching

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1973
This paper is a review of vacuum-arc phenomena which are related to switching devices. Despite the device overtones, the approach adopted for this paper is fundamental. Topics discussed include the drawn arc, the triggered arc, the power input to the cathode spot, cathode-spot division, arc stability, substructure of the cathode spot, dielectric ...

Computer simulation of ecton in a vacuum arc

IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, 1999
The paper presents results of nonstationary two-dimensional hydrodynamic model of vacuum arc emission center-ecton. The numerical simulation was carried out for the initial stage of the operation of the ecton of a low-current vacuum arc on a copper cathode. It was shown that the current flows in the main through the edges of the emission center.

On sputtering in vacuum arcs

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 1979
The effective condensation coefficient for the ion flux coming from the cathode spot region of a vacuum arc will be influenced by sputtering. Calculations for a copper vacuum arc indicate that sputtering alone will limit the effective ion condensation coefficient to, at most, 0.94 or 0.80 for copper surfaces at anode or cathode potential, respectively.

From Field Emission to Vacuum Arc Ignition: A New Tool for Simulating Copper Vacuum Arcs

Contributions to Plasma Physics, 2015
AbstractUnderstanding plasma initiation in vacuum arc discharges can help to bridge the gap between nano‐scale triggering phenomena and the macroscopic surface damage caused by vacuum arcs. We present a new twodimensional particle‐in‐cell tool to simulate plasma initiation in direct‐current (DC) copper vacuum arc discharges starting from a single ...
