2014 International Symposium on Discharges and Electrical Insulation in Vacuum (ISDEIV), 2014
Vacuum circuit breakers are extending their applications from low/medium voltage level to high voltage level due to their good properties. Multi-break vacuum circuit breakers are used in special applications because thry have better breaking capability and withstand higher breakdown voltage compared with single-break vacuum circuit breakers.

The vacuum arc and vacuum interruption
Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 1989The vacuum arc has been widely studied in recent years. One of the principal reasons for this interest has been the increasing use of the vacuum arc to achieve circuit interruption in electrical distribution systems. This is an expanding application with sales predictions of 300000 units for 1987 and with many millions already in service worldwide ...

V-t characteristics of vacuum interrupter after large current interruption
24th ISDEIV 2010, 2010Because of the contact material's evaporation and ejection of some metal particles out of the contact gap during the flow of the vacuum arc, the contact surface may exhibit some erosion after each operation of vacuum circuit breakers. In this study, the insulation properties were investigated for vacuum interrupters with the rated voltage about 10 kV ...

The self actuating vacuum interrupter (SAVI): A new concept in vacuum interrupter technology
2016 27th International Symposium on Discharges and Electrical Insulation in Vacuum (ISDEIV), 2016This paper describes a new approach to the design of Vacuum Interrupters. Presently a Vacuum Interrupter (VI) is a component of electrical switchgear, which relies on an external mechanism to provide the movement of the contacts required for switching operation.

Post-arc current measurement and interruption performance of vacuum interrupter in DC interruption
Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2022Abstract In the DC grid, fault current rises very fast due to low impedance. Fast DC circuit breakers are needed to isolate faults and avoid a collapse of the common DC grid voltage. Based on the forced current zero (CZ) technology, the vacuum interrupter (VI) equipped with fast electromagnetic repulsion mechanism is a very promising ...

The Vacuum Interrupter Contact
IEEE Transactions on Components, Hybrids, and Manufacturing Technology, 1984A survey of developments in electric contact design for vacuum interrupters is presented. The major emphasis is placed upon those characteristics of contact design that have led to practical vacuum interrupters. A brief description is given of the different modes of vacuum arc that have been observed and how these modes occur during one-half cycle of ...

Useful Life of Vacuum Interrupters
IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1978A vacuum interrupter may not be called upon to function to interrupt fault current for relatively lengthy periods of time. In the stand-by mode and carrying rated continuous current, some parts of the interrupter may reach temperatures substantially above ambient.

Dynamic insulation in vacuum interrupters
SPIE Proceedings, 1994Breaking capacity of vacuum circuit breakers is limited by dynamic voltage withstanding of their vacuum interrupters in a sense. Dynamic insulation in a vacuum interrupter can be represented externally by their dielectric recovery behavior and the stability of voltage withstanding.

Challenges For Vacuum Interrupter Design
2006 International Symposium on Discharges and Electrical Insulation in Vacuum, 2006Vacuum interrupters form the key component of a medium voltage (MV) vacuum switchgear design. Vacuum interrupter technology is now well established and key manufacturers across the world are routinely producing interrupters for ratings up to 52kVrms. Manufacturers have focused on reducing the cost of interrupter components by adapting to more efficient

Bouncing phenomena of vacuum interrupters
24th ISDEIV 2010, 2010Bouncing is a phenomenon often observed during circuit-breakers operation. The effect occurs at the moment, when the interrupter contacts touch during closing. For vacuum interrupters, bouncing is caused by the oscillatory motion of the movable vacuum interrupter stem in conjunction with the associated contact springs. The dependencies between involved
