Excitatory postsynaptic potentials in rat neocortical neurons in vitro. III. Effects of a quinoxalinedione non-NMDA receptor antagonist [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
1. Intracellular microelectrodes were used to obtain recordings from neurons in layer II/III of rat frontal cortex. A bipolar electrode positioned in layer IV of the neocortex was used to evoke postsynaptic potentials.

Multi‐Functional Adaptive Interfaces for Next‐Generation Wearable and Implantable Bioelectronics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Adaptive Biointerfaces: A comprehensive overview of next‐generation bioelectronics is presented, highlighting mechano‐adaptive and biophysiologically adaptive interfaces that enable stable, long‐term integration with living tissues. As illustrated in the image, adaptive interface strategies, including mechano‐adaptivity (e.g., injectability, shape ...

Therapies for Lennox-Gastaut syndrome [PDF]

open access: yesSrpski Arhiv za Celokupno Lekarstvo, 2005
The treatment of Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) has been improved with the introduction of the new anti-epileptic drugs: lamotrigine and topiramate, the employment of a ketogenic diet, and the availability of vagal nerve stimulation.

kHz-frequency electrical stimulation selectively activates small, unmyelinated vagus afferents

open access: yesBrain Stimulation, 2022
Background: Vagal reflexes regulate homeostasis in visceral organs and systems through afferent and efferent neurons and nerve fibers. Small, unmyelinated, C-type afferents comprise over 80% of fibers in the vagus and form the sensory arc of autonomic ...

Open‐label pilot study: Non‐invasive vagal nerve stimulation improves symptoms and gastric emptying in patients with idiopathic gastroparesis

open access: yesNeurogastroenterology and Motility, 2019
Gastroparesis, a chronic motility disorder characterized by delayed gastric emptying, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, remains largely unexplained. Medical therapy is limited, reflecting the complex physiology of gastric sensorimotor function. Vagus

Synchronization‐Dissipation in the Cardiorespiratory System

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
By modeling central nervous coupling and viscoelastic interactions in the cardiorespiratory system we show that synchronization produces a 10% gain in cardiac efficiency in humans. It is surmised that respiratory sinus arrhythmia improves cardiac pumping efficiency by reducing dynamic stress and power dissipation in the pulmonary vasculature.

Vagal Nerve Stimulation

open access: yesOpen Access Macedonian Journal of Medical Sciences, 2017
BACKGROUND: The vagus nerve stimulation (vns) is an approach mainly used in cases of intractable epilepsy despite all the efforts. Also, its benefits have been shown in severe cases of depression resistant to typical treatment.AIM: The aim of this study was to present current knowledge of vagus nerve stimulation.MATERIAL AND METHODS: A new value has ...

Quantifying acute physiological biomarkers of transcutaneous cervical vagal nerve stimulation in the context of psychological stress

open access: yesBrain Stimulation, 2019
Background: Stress is associated with activation of the sympathetic nervous system, and can lead to lasting alterations in autonomic function and in extreme cases symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
