Infection Models for Pine Wilt Disease on the Basis of Vector Behaviors

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
Infection models for pine wilt disease without vector density were built to estimate the transmission coefficient of the pathogenic nematode. The models successfully simulated the annual change in the density of infected trees for four pine stands. ABSTRACT Pine wilt disease is caused by the pinewood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus Steiner et ...

Physical Mathematics and The Fine-Structure Constant [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Research into ancient physical structures, some having been known as the seven wonders of the ancient world, inspired new developments in the early history of mathematics.

Speciation Through the Lens of Population Dynamics: A Theoretical Primer on How Small and Large Populations Diverge

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
Population size and dynamics fundamentally shape speciation by influencing genetic drift, founder events, and adaptive potential. Small populations may speciate rapidly due to stronger drift, whereas large populations harbor more genetic diversity, which can alter divergence trajectories. We highlight theoretical models that incorporate population size

Which qualities did aspiring teachers value in their ‘best’ mathematics teachers? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
When aspiring mathematics teachers were asked to describe one of their own mathematics teachers who had made an impact on them it was found that personal attributes such as empathy, caring and commitment to their students were mentioned most often.

Stability of quantized time-delay nonlinear systems: A Lyapunov-Krasowskii-functional approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Lyapunov-Krasowskii functionals are used to design quantized control laws for nonlinear continuous-time systems in the presence of constant delays in the input. The quantized control law is implemented via hysteresis to prevent chattering.

Structural dynamics of the plant hormone receptor ETR1 in a native‐like membrane environment

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The present study unveils the structural and signaling dynamics of ETR1, a key plant ethylene receptor. Using an optimized nanodisc system and solution NMR, we captured full‐length ETR1 in a native‐like membrane environment. Our findings reveal dynamic domain uncoupling and Cu(I)‐induced rigidification, providing the first evidence of metal‐triggered ...

Mathematics and its value for engineering students: what are the implications for teaching?

open access: yes, 2015
Mathematics has long been known to be problematic for university engineering students and their teachers, for example, Scanlan.[1] This paper presents recent data gathered from interviews with engineering students who experienced problems with ...

Detecting homologous recombination deficiency for breast cancer through integrative analysis of genomic data

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study develops a semi‐supervised classifier integrating multi‐genomic data (1404 training/5893 validation samples) to improve homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) detection in breast cancer. Our method demonstrates prognostic value and predicts chemotherapy/PARP inhibitor sensitivity in HRD+ tumours.
