Active Yet Cautious: How Middle States Navigate Status in the Universal Periodic Review

open access: yesGlobal Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article examines how states positioned in the middle of the international status hierarchy behave in the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR). While the UPR was established as a cooperative mechanism to move away from confrontational naming and shaming, in practice it has become a reputational arena where states strategically ...

Residual permutation tests for feature importance in machine learning

open access: yesBritish Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract Psychological research has traditionally relied on linear models to test scientific hypotheses. However, the emergence of machine learning (ML) algorithms has opened new opportunities for exploring variable relationships beyond linear constraints.

PSHead: 3D Head Reconstruction from a Single Image with Diffusion Prior and Self‐Enhancement

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
We introduce PSHead, a coarse‐to‐fine framework guided by both object and face priors, to produce a Gaussian‐based 3D avatar for a single frontal‐view reference image. In the coarse stage, we create an initial 3D representation by applying diffusion models trained for general object generation, using Score Distillation Sampling losses over novel views.

EvolvED: Evolutionary Embeddings to Understand the Generation Process of Diffusion Models

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
EvolvED visualises how diffusion models generate images by embedding intermediate outputs to preserve semantics and evolutionary structure. It supports analysis via (a) user‐defined goals and prompts, (b) sampling intermediate images, (c) extracting relevant features, and (d) visualising them in structured radial and rectilinear layouts for ...

What are particularistic pejoratives?

open access: yesMind &Language, EarlyView.
Particularistic pejoratives (PPs) mock individuals based on their personal attributes yet lack a precise definition. This paper seeks to refine our understanding of PPs by examining their derogatory profiles across three dimensions: descriptiveness, intensity, and slurring potential.
