Synergistic perspectives—How single‐molecule biophysics complement biochemical understanding

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how ensemble biochemistry and single‐molecule approaches are complementary, outline commonly used single‐molecule techniques, and illustrate their relevance through two representative case studies: chromatin organization by SMC complexes and pathway choice during DNA double‐strand break repair.

Translophagy—A potential link between autophagy impairment and translational errors

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neurodegenerative diseases are characterised by the accumulation of abnormal proteins and protein aggregates, but their origin often remains unknown. We propose that selective autophagy removes damaged protein‐making machinery, preventing errors during protein synthesis.

Variable Mass Dynamics Of Celestial Bodies Revisited With Modification [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Whittaker1 introduced variable mass dynamics in Celestial Mechanics  obtaining as Jacobi –Lagrange counterpart2 a differential equation involving the moment of inertia, where time is  taken as the independent variable.

Functional comparison of EncB and EncC cargo proteins in iron storage within the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...

Iterative Construction of Reversible Variable-Length Codes and Variable-Length Error-Correcting Codes

open access: yes, 2004
We propose a generic algorithm for the construction of efficient reversible variable-length codes (RVLCs) and variable-length error-correcting (VLEC) codes, which optimizes the codeword length distribution.

The ALMA Survey of Gas Evolution of PROtoplanetary Disks (AGE-PRO). XII. Extreme Millimeter Variability Detected in a Class II Disk

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Variability of millimeter wavelength continuum emission from Class II protoplanetary disks is extremely rare, and when detected, it is usually interpreted as originating from nonthermal emission mechanisms that relate to the host star itself rather than ...

Probing the Composition, Assembly and Activity of Protein Molecular Machines using Native Mass Spectrometry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Native mass spectrometry and mass spectrometry in general, are powerful analytical tools for studying proteins and protein complexes. Native mass spectrometry may provide accurate mass measurements of large macromolecular assemblies enabling the ...

The Shewanella oneidensis Fic enzyme SoFic targets the switch‐I region of EF‐Tu for AMPylation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fic enzymes mediate diverse post‐translational modifications across all domains of life, including AMPylation. Prokaryotic EF‐Tu can be AMPylated and deAMPylated by the conserved Fic enzyme SoFic. Structural and biochemical approaches were used to characterize the effect of AMPylation on EF‐Tu, SoFic's enzymatic activities, and the enzyme‐target ...

Chiral separation of chloroalkanes with the chromatographic column onboard Martian rovers

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Computer image of the Rosalind Franklin Rover of ESA's ExoMars mission. ExoMars is scheduled to land on planet Mars in Oxia Planum in 2029. This area represents an interesting spot to look for biosignatures. Investigations of ExoMars include measurement on molecular chirality. We show that chiral chloroalkanes, that have been identified on Mars, can be

Imaging mass spectrometry of polymeric materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Imaging mass spectrometry (MS) is a technique that makes images of molecular distributions at surfaces based on mass spectral information. At a range (typically a raster) of positions, mass spectra are measured from the surface giving a characteristic ...
