A tendon-driven actuator with cantilever initiated variable stiffness used for robotic fingers

open access: yes
Variable stiffness actuators (VSAs) have emerged as a key actuation technology known for their bionic performance and task adaptability. However, current VSAs often exhibit relatively large sizes, making them possible for use in robotic arms and legs but

Experimental Evaluation of 100Cr6 Steel Microindented Surfaces Under Lubricated Nonconformal Point Contacts

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The tribological behavior of 100Cr6 steel spheres textured via Vickers microindentation is evaluated under lubricated sliding by varying both dimple size and density. Fine and dense textures significantly reduce friction across all lubrication regimes, while large dimples increase it.

Impedence Control for Variable Stiffness Mechanisms with Nonlinear Joint Coupling

open access: yes, 2008
The current discussion on physical human robot interaction and the related safety aspects, but also the interest of neuro-scientists to validate their hypotheses on human motor skills with bio-mimetic robots, led to a recent revival of tendondriven ...

Biaxial strain and variable stiffness in aponeuroses

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, 2009
The elastic structures of many muscles include both an extramuscular free tendon as well as a sheet‐like aponeurosis. An important distinguishing feature of aponeuroses is that these tendinous structures function as the attachment and insertion surfaces of muscle fascicles and therefore surround a substantial portion of the muscle belly.

Electrochemical Evaluation of Compressed Selective Laser Melted AlSi7Mg and AlSi10Mg Alloys in Chloride Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The corrosion performance of AlSi7Mg and AlSi10Mg alloys produced through selective laser melting (SLM) was examined under compressive stress in a chloride environment. Electrochemical analyses, including open‐circuit potential (OCP), potentiodynamic polarization (CPP), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), were complemented by scanning ...

Shock isolation using switchable stiffness

open access: yes, 2008
This study investigates a novel stiffness control strategy applied to the problem of shock isolation. This is based on the principle that the stiffness and mass are the principal physical properties that control the passive system shock response.

Augmenting Variable Stiffness Actuation Using Reaction Wheels

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2016
A branch of robotics, variable impedance actuation, along with one of its subfields variable stiffness actuation (VSA), is gaining momentum recently. There have been many thorough studies earlier in the design and recently in the control of these systems.

A Workflow to Accelerate Microstructure‐Sensitive Fatigue Life Predictions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a workflow to accelerate predictions of microstructure‐sensitive fatigue life. Results from frameworks with varying levels of simplification are benchmarked against published reference results. The analysis reveals a trade‐off between accuracy and model complexity, offering researchers a practical guide for selecting the optimal ...

A Numerical–Experimental Approach for Multi‐Matrix Fiber‐Reinforced Plastics Characterization Using Finite Element Model Updating

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A numerical–experimental framework is developed for characterizing multi‐matrix fiber‐reinforced polymers (MM‐FRPs) combining epoxy and polyurethane matrices. Harmonic bending tests are integrated with finite element model updating (FEMU) to simultaneously identify elastic and viscoelastic material parameters.

Nonlinear vibration isolators with asymmetric stiffness

open access: yes, 2012
A vibration source is commonly coupled to a receiving structure by a vibration isolator. A key trade-off in the choice of vibration isolator is the requirement for a wide frequency range of isolation without excessive static deflection.
