Variation entropy: a continuous local generalization of the TVD property using entropy principles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
This paper presents the notion of a variation entropy. This concept is an entropy framework for the gradient of the solution of a conservation law instead of on the solution itself. It appears that all semi-norms are admissible variation entropies.

Consistent Weighted Average Flux of Well-Balanced TVD-RK Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Shallow Water Flows

open access: yesModelling and Simulation in Engineering, 2015
A well-balanced scheme with total variation diminishing Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (TVD-RK DG) method for solving shallow water equations is presented.

Total negativity: Characterizations and single-vector tests [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
A matrix is called totally negative (totally non-positive) of order $k$, if all its minors of size at most $k$ are negative (non-positive). The objective of this article is to provide several novel characterizations of total negativity via the (a) sign ...

Second order Implicit-Explicit Total Variation Diminishing schemes for the Euler system in the low Mach regime [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
International audienceIn this work, we consider the development of implicit explicit total variation diminishing (TVD) methods (also termed SSP: strong stability preserving) for the compressible isentropic Euler system in the low Mach number regime.

Variations on a theme by Schoenberg [PDF]

open access: yes, 1976
In this note we discuss three types of polynomial spline approximation: (i) Schoenberg's variation-diminishing approximation, (ii) simple variation-diminishing approximation, and (iii) a natural extrapolated approximation which can be obtained by taking ...

Natural Killer Cells in Paediatric Soft Tissue Sarcomas: A Systematic Review

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Paediatric soft tissue sarcomas (pSTS) are a rare and heterogeneous group of malignant tumours arising in tissues of mesenchymal origin. The role of natural killer (NK) cells in pSTS remains poorly understood, with evidence fragmented across small preclinical studies and early‐phase clinical trials.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A geometric proof of total positivity for spline interpolation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
Simple geometric proofs are given for the total positivity of the B-spline collocation matrix and the variation diminishing property of the B-spline representation of a spline.

Variation diminishing properties of Bernstein polynomials on triangles

open access: yesJournal of Approximation Theory, 1987
Let T be a triangle, \(f: T\to R\), \(B_ n(f,T)=Bn(f)\) the Bernstein polynomial of degree n and \(\{\hat f{}_ n\}\) the net of Bézier of order n for f on T. Let \(V(f,T)=\int_{T}(f^ 2_ x+f^ 2_ y)^{1/2} dT\) and \(V_ 1(f,T)=\int_{T}(f^ 2_{xx}+2f^ 2_{xy}+f^ 2_{yy})^{1/2} dT.\) Then the following results hold: 1) For any \(n\geq 1\) we have \(V_ 1(B_ n(f)
