Variational methods for phononic calculations [PDF]
Three fundamental variational principles used for solving elastodynamic eigenvalue problems are studied within the context of elastic wave propagation in periodic composites (phononics). We study the convergence of the eigenvalue problems resulting from the displacement Rayleigh quotient, the stress Rayleigh quotient and the mixed quotient.

Black Box Variational Inference [PDF]
Variational inference has become a widely used method to approximate posteriors in complex latent variables models. However, deriving a variational inference algorithm generally requires significant model-specific analysis, and these efforts can hinder ...

A simple variational approach to Nonlinear Maxwell equations [PDF]
We show that nonlinear Maxwell Equations in $\R^3$ admit a convenient dual variational formulation that permits to prove the existence of nontrivial solutions via standard variational methods.

Variational approach for resolving the flow of generalized Newtonian fluids in circular pipes and plane slits [PDF]
In this paper, we use a generic and general variational method to obtain solutions to the flow of generalized Newtonian fluids through circular pipes and plane slits. The new method is not based on the use of the Euler-Lagrange variational principle and hence it is totally independent of our previous approach which is based on this principle.

Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Total Variation Minimization on one-dimensional Inpainting Problem [PDF]
This paper is concerned with the numerical minimization of energy functionals in $BV(\Omega)$ (the space of bounded variation functions) involving total variation for gray-scale 1-dimensional inpainting problem. Applications are shown by finite element method and discontinuous Galerkin method for total variation minimization.

Nonsmooth Lagrangian mechanics and variational collision integrators [PDF]
Variational techniques are used to analyze the problem of rigid-body dynamics with impacts. The theory of smooth Lagrangian mechanics is extended to a nonsmooth context appropriate for collisions, and it is shown in what sense the system is symplectic ...

Self-Adaptive Implicit Methods for Monotone Variant Variational Inequalities
The efficiency of the implicit method proposed by He (1999) depends on the parameter heavily; while it varies for individual problem, that is, different problem has different "suitable" parameter, which is difficult to find.

We establish the existence of positive solutions for the singular quasilinear Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\Delta u -\Delta (u^{2})u=h(x) u^{-\gamma} + f(x,u)& \mbox{in } \Omega,\\ u(x)=0&\mbox{on }\partial \Omega, \end{cases ...

Split general quasi-variational inequality problem [PDF]
In this paper, we introduce a split general quasi-variational inequality problem which is a natural extension of split variational inequality problem, quasi-variational and variational inequality problems in Hilbert spaces. Using projection method, we propose an iterative algorithm for the split general quasi-variational inequality problem and discuss ...
