Sensitivity analysis and parameter estimation for distributed hydrological modeling: potential of variational methods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Variational methods are widely used for the analysis and control of computationally intensive spatially distributed systems. In particular, the adjoint state method enables a very efficient calculation of the derivatives of an objective function ...

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Research on loudspeaker abnormal sound classification based on adaptive variational mode decomposition and RCNN-3

open access: yesXi'an Gongcheng Daxue xuebao, 2023
Aimed at the low accuracy of loudspeaker abnormal sound classification, an abnormal sound classification method based on the combination of adaptive variational mode decomposition (AVMD) and residual convolutional neural network (RCNN) is proposed.

Classical and Quantum Ensembles via Multiresolution. I. BBGKY Hierarchy

open access: yes, 2004
A fast and efficient numerical-analytical approach is proposed for modeling complex behaviour in the BBGKY hierarchy of kinetic equations. We construct the multiscale representation for hierarchy of reduced distribution functions in the variational ...

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Mode Variational LSTM Robust to Unseen Modes of Variation: Application to Facial Expression Recognition

open access: yes, 2018
Spatio-temporal feature encoding is essential for encoding the dynamics in video sequences. Recurrent neural networks, particularly long short-term memory (LSTM) units, have been popular as an efficient tool for encoding spatio-temporal features in ...

Radar fingerprint extraction via variational mode decomposition [PDF]

open access: yes2017 25th Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference (SIU), 2017
In iMs paper, a novel method for extracting radar fingerprint using the unintentional modulation on radar signals is proposed. Proposed technique decomposes the unintentional modulations into its components using Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) technique. Then, features that characterize each component are calculated.

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Impulse Signal Detection for Bearing Fault Diagnosis via Residual-Variational Mode Decomposition

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
A novel method named residual-variational mode decomposition (RVMD) is proposed in this study to extract bearing fault features accurately. RVMD can determine the number of modes and the balance parameter adaptively, and it has two stages.
