Epigenetics and vascular diseases

open access: yesJournal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, 2019
Cardiovascular disease remains the number one cause of death and disability worldwide despite significant improvements in diagnosis, prevention, and early intervention efforts. There is an urgent need for improved understanding of cardiovascular processes responsible for disease development in order to develop more effective therapeutic strategies ...

Obesity alters the fitness of peritumoral adipose tissue, exacerbating tumor invasiveness in renal cancer through the induction of ADAM12 and CYP1B1

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor microenvironment drives cancer formation and progression. We analyzed the role of human cancer‐associated adipocytes from patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) stratified as lean, overweight, or obese. RNA‐seq demonstrated that, among the most altered genes involved in the tumor–stroma crosstalk, are ADAM12 and CYP1B1, which were proven to be ...

Effect of SGLT2 inhibitors on body composition, fluid status and renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system in type 2 diabetes: a prospective study using bioimpedance spectroscopy

open access: yesCardiovascular Diabetology, 2019
Background SGLT2-inhibitors are potent antihyperglycemic drugs for patients with type 2 diabetes and have been shown to reduce body weight. However, it is unclear which body compartments are reduced and to what extent.

Higher circulating Trimethylamine N-oxide levels are associated with worse severity and prognosis in pulmonary hypertension: a cohort study

open access: yesRespiratory Research, 2022
Background Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), the gut microbiota-dependent metabolite, is a potential biomarker in several cardiovascular diseases. However, no study has investigated its value in pulmonary hypertension (PH).

Plasma β-amyloid in Alzheimer’s disease and vascular disease

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2016
Implementation of amyloid biomarkers in clinical practice would be accelerated if such biomarkers could be measured in blood. We analyzed plasma levels of Aβ42 and Aβ40 in a cohort of 719 individuals (the Swedish BioFINDER study), including patients with

Polyfunctional CD8+CD226+RUNX2hi effector T cells are diminished in advanced stages of chronic lymphocytic leukemia

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CD226+CD8+ T cells express elevated levels of RUNX2, exhibit higher proliferation capacity, cytokines and cytolytic molecules expression, and migratory capacity. In contrast, CD226−CD8+ T cells display an exhausted phenotype associated with the increased expression of co‐inhibitory receptors and impaired effector functions.

The association between the “T” vein and ulceration of the lateral aspect of the leg

open access: yesVeins and Lymphatics
The “T” vein is a tributary of The Great Saphenous Vein (GSV) located in the upper third of the leg with a perpendicular course to the GSV. It usually crosses the tibial bone and feeds by reflux of varicose veins of the lateral aspect of the leg.

Peripheral blood proteome biomarkers distinguish immunosuppressive features of cancer progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Immune status significantly influences cancer progression. This study used plasma proteomics to analyze benign 67NR and malignant 4T1 breast tumor models at early and late tumor stages. Immune‐related proteins–osteopontin (Spp1), lactotransferrin (Ltf), calreticulin (Calr) and peroxiredoxin 2 (Prdx2)–were associated with systemic myeloid‐derived ...

Label-Free Non-Contact Structural and Functional Vascular Imaging using Photon Absorption Remote Sensing [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Vascular imaging is critical for understanding human health and disease. Most established non-contact and label-free optical techniques capture predominantly structural information about vasculature. However, in many pathologies, functional changes often precede visible morphological changes. This limits the ability of established modalities to prevent
