A new staging system for hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis in the era of specific amyloidosis therapies

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, Volume 12, Issue 6, Page 4125-4139, December 2025.
The aim of our study was to develop a more accurate staging system for hereditary ATTR patients currently receiving specific treatment. A staging system was created using as criteria: GLS ≤ −11%, NT‐proBNP ≤ 2,000 ng/L, and eGFR ≤ 65 mL/min. We managed to accurately stratify patients into three disease stages, significantly different in terms of ...

Prevention of vasoplegia with CytoSorb in heart failure patients undergoing cardiac surgery (CytoSorb-HF trial): protocol for a randomised controlled trial

open access: yesBMJ Open, 2022
Introduction Vasoplegia is a common complication after cardiac surgery and is associated with poor prognosis. It is characterised by refractory hypotension despite normal or even increased cardiac output.

Heart transplantation outcomes with donation after circulatory death in patients with left ventricular assist device

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, Volume 12, Issue 5, Page 3333-3342, October 2025.
Abstract Aims Donation after circulatory death (DCD) has emerged as a strategy to increase the donor pool for heart transplantation (HT). Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) patients represent a discrete and unique population. We sought to explore the early outcomes of DCD‐HT compared with donation after brain death (DBD) HT in LVAD patients. Methods

Rapid reversal of vasoplegia with methylene blue in calcium channel blocker poisoning

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Emergency Medicine, 2020
Introduction: Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are a potent class of medications that exert its action by blocking ‘L-type’ calcium channels. CCB overdose can be fatal even with appropriate and aggressive therapy. Death ensues from heart block, myocardial

Quercetin Reduces Vascular Senescence and Inflammation in Symptomatic Male but Not Female Coronary Artery Disease Patients

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 24, Issue 8, August 2025.
In male patients undergoing CABG surgery, pretreatment with quercetin suppressed inflammaging and its associated inflammation, leading to improved endothelium‐dependent relaxation (measured ex vivo) and reducing new onset of post‐operative atrial fibrillation.

Provider Perspectives on the Role of Hypotension in Pediatric Kidney Transplant: A Pediatric Nephrology Research Consortium Study

open access: yesPediatric Transplantation, Volume 29, Issue 5, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Background The lack of a consistent definition for hypotension in the pediatric population complicates the study of hypotension in pediatric kidney transplant recipients. Additionally, there is limited data to guide the management of hypotension in these patients both before and after transplantation.

High-Dose Hydroxocobalamin for Refractory Vasoplegia Post Cardiac Surgery

open access: yesCureus, 2022
Administration of high-dose hydroxocobalamin, or vitamin B12, is an emerging, targeted rescue therapy for the treatment of refractory vasoplegic shock. This is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening complication following cardiac surgery and carries a poor prognosis, particularly when patients fail to respond to first-line therapy with ...

Pericardial Effusion and Prostacyclin Analog Toxicity After Initiation of Sotatercept

open access: yesPulmonary Circulation, Volume 15, Issue 3, July 2025.
ABSTRACT Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a disorder characterized by progressive remodeling of small pulmonary arteries, leading to increased pulmonary vascular resistance, right ventricular failure and premature death (1‐2). Over the past 30 years, significant advancements have been made in the treatment of PAH, including the recent approval ...

Clinical Outcomes of Angiotensin II Therapy in Vasoplegic Shock: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

open access: yesLife
Background: Angiotensin II is a peptide hormone vasopressor that activates angiotensin type 1 (AT1) receptors leading to vasoconstriction, the augmentation of arterial blood pressure (ABP), and organ perfusion.

Perfusion Pressures and Weight Loss During Normothermic Machine Perfusion of Human Donor Livers

open access: yesArtificial Organs, Volume 49, Issue 5, Page 820-830, May 2025.
Normothermic machine perfusion is used to preserve and assess donor livers before transplantation. Nevertheless, it can lead to reduced liver weight, which might be masked by edema when high perfusion pressures are used. Therefore, we encourage using the lowest pressures possible to reach adequate flows and oxygen supply during perfusion.
