West Nile Virus Lineage 2 Vector Competence of Indigenous Culex and Aedes Mosquitoes from Germany at Temperate Climate Conditions

open access: yesViruses, 2020
West Nile virus (WNV) is a widespread zoonotic arbovirus and a threat to public health in Germany since its first emergence in 2018. It has become of particular relevance in Germany in 2019 due to its rapid geographical spread and the detection of the ...

Cell Surface Thiol Engineering Mechanoregulates Myogenic Differentiation via the FAK–PI3K–AKT Axis

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Schematic diagram illustrating how cell surface modification of skeletal muscle progenitor cells through TCEP treatment reveals enhanced cell adhesion, intracellular tension, and myogenesis at 19.66 kPa stiffness, leading to optimal cell fusion. In contrast, no significant changes are observed in the softer (10.61 kPa) or stiffer (49.4 kPa) matrices ...

N-linked glycosylation of the West Nile virus envelope protein is not a requisite for avian virulence or vector competence.

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2019
The N-linked glycosylation motif at amino acid position 154-156 of the envelope (E) protein of West Nile virus (WNV) is linked to enhanced murine neuroinvasiveness, avian pathogenicity and vector competence.

Vector Competence of Australian Mosquitoes for Yellow Fever Virus [PDF]

open access: yesThe American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2011
The vector competence of Australian mosquitoes for yellow fever virus (YFV) was evaluated. Infection and transmission rates in Cairns and Townsville populations of Aedes aegypti and a Brisbane strain of Ae. notoscriptus were not significantly different from a well-characterized YFV-susceptible strain of Ae. aegypti.

Implantable Light‐Powered Human Designer Cells for Electrical Energy Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by the eel's electric organ, a miniature implantable biohybrid device is developed to generate electricity under light activation. The device utilizes a light‐dependent ion gradient formation that induced by genetically engineered human designer cells that express light‐sensitive membrane ion channels and proton pumps, working in synergy with ...
