Persistent vegetative state [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of General Practice, 2010
Mick Leach, commenting on David Jewell's editorial on assisted dying,1 writes that ‘we are part of a wider global society that is in many ways becoming more uniform … that does not mean that we should necessarily always take the same route as other countries’.2 I would like to underline two key cases that happened in the UK and Italy that have been ...

Vegetative incompatibility and potential involvement of a mycovirus in the Italian population of Geosmithia morbida [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Studies carried out during an Italian outbreak of the Thousand Cankers Disease of walnut, demonstrated that non-coalescing cankers on host plants, separated by equidistant uninfected zones, were associated with incompatible strains of Geosmithia morbida.

Wireless, 3D Optical Sensor Fabricated Using Mechanical Buckling for Navigation and Agriculture Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This study develops a 3D optical sensor formed by mechanical buckling and equipped with wireless communication for navigation. Off‐the‐shelf electronic components are assembled onto a flexible circuit board, followed by mechanical strain‐guiding, facilitating the integration of an out‐of‐plane sensing configuration with a signal processing module. This

Questioning the dichotomy between vegetative state and minimally conscious state: A review of the statistical evidence

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2014
Given the enormous consequences that the diagnosis of vegetative state (VS) vs. minimally conscious state (MCS) may have for the treatment of patients with disorders of consciousness, it is particularly important to empirically legitimate the distinction

Storage Potential of Soil Functional Carbon Fractions in the World's Largest Plantations

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Climate warming and drying increase the loss of mineral‐associated and particulate organic carbon during the conversion of natural forests to plantations. Based on a survey of the world's largest plantations, the study quantifies the soil carbon deficit in plantations and assesses benchmarks and targets for functional soil organic carbon, highlighting ...

Cognitive processing in non-communicative patients: what can event-related potentials tell us?

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2016
Event-related potentials (ERP) have been proposed to improve the differential diagnosis of non-responsive patients. We investigated the potential of the P300 as a reliable marker of conscious processing in patients with locked-in syndrome (LIS). Eleven

Detecting Awareness in the Vegetative State [PDF]

open access: yesScience, 2006
We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to demonstrate preserved conscious awareness in a patient fulfilling the criteria for a diagnosis of vegetative state. When asked to imagine playing tennis or moving around her home, the patient activated predicted cortical areas in a manner indistinguishable from that of healthy volunteers.

Live or Let Die? The Court of Protection's Ground-Breaking Decision in M. v. N. (by her litigation friend, the Official Solicitor) and others [2015] EWCOP 76 (Fam.) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This case note examines the first case in which the Court of Protection authorised the withdrawal of life-sustaining nutrition and hydration from a patient in a minimally conscious state. It reflects on the judge’s stated view that the label given to the
