A Novel Mixed Finite/Infinite Dimensional Port–Hamiltonian Model of a Mechanical Ventilator

open access: yesComputation
Mechanical ventilation is a life-saving treatment for critically ill patients who are struggling to breathe independently due to injury or disease. Globally, per year, there has always been a large number of individuals who have required mechanical ...

The selection of a mechanical ventilator [PDF]

open access: yesCanadian Anaesthetists’ Society Journal, 1959
(1) An attempt has been made to discuss the elementary physiological requirements of a mechanical ventilator. (2) The types of machine available are grouped and it is shown that volume constant-pressure variable machmes provide the most satisfactory ventilation.

Design and performance testing of a novel emergency ventilator for in-hospital use

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Respiratory Therapy, 2020
Background The rapidly evolving COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased use of critical care resources, particularly mechanical ventilators. Amidst growing concerns that the health care system could face a shortage of ventilators in the future, there is ...

Complications of mechanical ventilation

open access: yesSrpski arhiv za celokupno lekarstvo, 2011
Mechanical ventilation of the lungs, as an important therapeutic measure, cannot be avoided in critically ill patients. However, when machines take over some of vital functions there is always a risk of complications and accidents. Complications associated with mechanical ventilation can be divided into: 1) airway-associated complications ...

Performance of mechanical ventilators at the patient's home: a multicentric quality control study

open access: yes, 2006
Background: Quality control procedures vary considerably among the providers of equipment for home mechanical ventilation (HMV). Methods: A multicentre quality control survey of HMV was performed at the home of 300 patients included in the HMV programmes

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Effect of individualized positive end-expiratory pressure titration guided by electrical impedance tomography on oxygenation in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery in the lateral decubitus position: a randomized controlled study [PDF]

open access: yesKorean Journal of Anesthesiology
Background Laparoscopic surgery in the lateral decubitus position can alter pulmonary mechanics and oxygenation. Although positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) may alleviate these effects, the optimal level remains unclear. This study evaluated whether
