Smoking-Induced Ventral Striatum Dopamine Release

American Journal of Psychiatry, 2004
Substantial evidence from animal models demonstrates that dopamine release in the ventral striatum underlies the reinforcing properties of nicotine. The authors used [(11)C]raclopride bolus-plus-continuous-infusion positron emission tomography (PET) to determine smoking-induced ventral striatum dopamine release in humans.Twenty nicotine-dependent ...

Vomeronasal inputs to the rodent ventral striatum

Brain Research Bulletin, 2008
Vertebrates sense chemical signals through the olfactory and vomeronasal systems. In squamate reptiles, which possess the largest vomeronasal system of all vertebrates, the accessory olfactory bulb projects to the nucleus sphericus, which in turn projects to a portion of the ventral striatum known as olfactostriatum.

The Ventral Striatum of the Syrian Hamster

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1999
The Syrian hamster, Mesocricetus auratus, was first used in laboratory experiments some fifty years ago in the Middle East, from animals captured in the wild. 1 Since then the Syrian hamster has been domesticated and used extensively in laboratory studies of motivation, includuing reproduction, feeding, aggression and circadian behaviors.

Depression in Humans: The Ventral Capsule/Ventral Striatum

2012
The use of deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral capsule/ventral striatum (VC/VS) for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) stems from pioneering work in obsessive–compulsive disorder. Understanding the rationale for the VC/VS target chosen for investigation of MDD requires an appreciation of the neuroanatomical structures and their ...

Cognitive outcome after ventral capsule/ventral striatum stimulation for treatment-resistant major depression

Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, 2016
We report the neuropsychological outcome of 25 patients with treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (TRD) who participated in an Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved randomised double-blind trial comparing active to sham deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the anterior limb of the ventral capsule/ventral striatum (VC/VS).Participants were ...

Regulation of Neurotransmitter Interactions in the Ventral Striatum

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1999
ABSTRACT:Transsynaptic activation of neuronal circuits originating in the basal forebrain contributes to psychostimulant‐evoked dopamine and glutamate release and consequent changes in medium spiny neuronal gene expression in the ventral striatum.

Relationship between anxiety and serotonin in the ventral striatum

NeuroReport, 1998
Rats were tested in an elevated plus-maze on two consecutive days. Based on the percentage of time spent in the open arms on the 1st day, they were divided into two subgroups with either low or high anxiety levels. A post-mortem neurochemical analysis showed that animals with high anxiety had lower ventral striatal tissue levels of 5-HT.

Responses to reward in monkey dorsal and ventral striatum

Experimental Brain Research, 1991
The sources of input and the behavioral effects of lesions and drug administration suggest that the striatum participates in motivational processes. We investigated the activity of single striatal neurons of monkeys in response to reward delivered for performing in a go-nogo task.

Synaptic Organization of Nucleus Accumbens (Ventral Striatum)

1991
Experimental studies have produced many data over the past few years which implicate nucleus accumbens in the motivational and attentional processes that are important for goal-directed behaviors (Willner and Scheel-Kruger, 1990). Moreover, disorders, such as schizophrenia, which involve the disruption of these behaviors, are thought to be specifically
