The Mathematics of Phylogenomics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The grand challenges in biology today are being shaped by powerful high-throughput technologies that have revealed the genomes of many organisms, global expression patterns of genes and detailed information about variation within populations.

Mitochondria and Neuromast Tagging With Fluorescent Gallium‐Triapine Analogues: In Cellulo MP FLIM and Zebrafish Live Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Fluorescent BODIPY‐conjugated thiosemicarbazone ligands and their Ga(III), In(III), and Fe(III) complexes, inspired by Triapine, are developed as theranostic agents. Multiphoton FLIM and confocal microscopy in cancer cells and zebrafish reveal real‐time uptake, mitochondrial localisation, and whilst spectroscopic assays indicated preserved complex ...

Avoidance of carnivore carcasses by vertebrate scavengers enables colonization by a diverse community of carrion insects.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Carrion resources sustain a complex and diverse community of both vertebrate and invertebrate scavengers, either obligate or facultative. However, although carrion ecology has received increasing scientific attention in recent years, our understanding of

Burying Beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae) of the Apostle Islands, Wisconsin: Species Diversity, Population Density and Body Size [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Over 2400 burying beetles, representing six species (Nicrophorus defodiens, N. sayi, N orbicollis, N. tomentosus, N vespilloides, and N. pustulatus), were trapped from 27 June to 4 August, 1996 at nine study sites (3 small islands, 3 large islands, and 3

EMG‐Driven Telemetry and Inference System for Fish: Pose Reconstruction and Flow Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This work introduces an electromyography (EMG)‐driven telemetry framework that reconstructs body pose and infers hydrodynamic conditions in freely swimming fish. A custom 16‐channel archival system records intramuscular EMG, enabling deep‐learning models to decode joint kinematics, classify flow regimes, and reveal channel‐efficient sensing strategies.

Research progress on biomarkers of traumatic brain injury

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Traumatic brain injury: From primary insult to secondary neuroinflammation and degeneration. Abstract Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common disorder of the nervous system and has become a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, imposing a substantial burden on patients and their social circles. Its main symptoms include dyskinesia, language

Record of foraging of ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) in vertebrate carcasses

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2016
Knowing the importance of participation by insects at cadaverous decomposition processes, and the limited use of the family Formicidae in criminal investigations, this study aims to record the foraging activity of four genera of ants in carcasses of ...

Three-material decomposition with dual-layer spectral CT compared to MRI for the detection of bone marrow edema in patients with acute vertebral fractures [PDF]

open access: yesSkeletal Radiology, 2018
To assess whether bone marrow edema in patients with acute vertebral fractures can be accurately diagnosed based on three-material decomposition with dual-layer spectral CT (DLCT).Acute (n = 41) and chronic (n = 18) osteoporotic thoracolumbar vertebral fractures as diagnosed by MRI (hyperintense signal in STIR sequences) in 27 subjects (72 ± 11 years ...

Foraging risk in scavenging ecology: A study of scavenger behavior and patterns of bacterial growth

open access: yesBasic and Applied Ecology, 2022
Scavenging constitutes an understudied energy pathway in terrestrial ecosystems, with important connections to disease ecology. A prevailing null hypothesis in scavenging ecology is that carcasses serve as a risk-free meal for whatever animal first ...
