Approximation Theory Applied to DEM Vertical Accuracy Assessment

Transactions in GIS, 2012
AbstractExisting research on DEM vertical accuracy assessment uses mainly statistical methods, in particular variance and RMSE which are both based on the error propagation theory in statistics. This article demonstrates that error propagation theory is not applicable because the critical assumption behind it cannot be satisfied.

Effect of Vibration on the Accuracy of a Vertical Reference Pendulum

SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 1967
The pendulum has been used from ancient times as a means of establishing a local vertical reference. One of the earliest accounts of the use of the pendulum as a plumb-bob comes from Thebes, Egypt, about 1,100 B.C. [l, p. 4811. As the years passed, the requirements for accuracy have increased until today the accuracy requirements for missile ...

Prediction of Machining Accuracy for Vertical Lathes

2014
This article proposes the methodology allowing a prediction of geometric and working accuracy of large CNC machines tools (MT). The presented approach to behavior predicting is applied to kinematics of vertical lathe with an emphasis on different machining conditions.

Accuracy of gravimetrically computed deflections of the vertical

Eos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 1957
The rms (root mean square) error of the deflection of the vertical computed from gravity anomalies by the Vening Meinesz formula was calculated for two sets of hypotheses: (1) perfect knowledge of gravity within given radii, and none beyond; (2) ideal distribution of given numbers of gravity stations out to given radii, and no stations, or a uniform ...

Internalization Ratio, Accuracy, and Variability of Judgments of the Vertical

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1963
In an unpublished study (which yielded equivocal results) investigating the relationship between auditory stimulation and perception of the vertical, a subsidiary hypothesis was made pertinent to the relationship between Welsh's (1956) MMPI-derived Internalization Ratio (IR) and the accuracy and variability of judgments of the vertical.

Forecast Accuracy with Optimum Vertical Model Truncation

Monthly Weather Review, 1992
Abstract The National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Climate Model 1 was used as an experimental prediction model to assess the value of reassigning model levels in the vertical based on an optimizing hypothesis. The model was considered for T31 horizontal truncation and 12 vertical levels.

Accuracy and repeatability of smartphone sensors for measuring shank-to-vertical angle

Prosthetics & Orthotics International, 2020
Assessments of human movement are clinically important. However, accurate measurements are often unavailable due to the need for expensive equipment or intensive processing. For orthotists and therapists, shank-to-vertical angle is one critical measure used to assess gait and guide prescriptions.

Decrement in the Horizontal–Vertical Illusion: Are Subjects Aware of Their Increased Accuracy?

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 2000
47 subjects adjusted the extended vertical lines of 20 inverted-T figures to make them appear equal to a horizontal line and rated the confidence in their accuracy after each trial. One group viewed figures of varying sizes, a second group viewed figures of standard size, and a third group viewed figures of standard size but received feedback on their ...

The impact of sensor parameters on the accuracy of a strapdown inertial vertical gyroscope

Automation and Remote Control, 2013
The major factors affecting the accuracy and performance of any measuring system are the errors of embedded sensors. In this paper we analyze the impact of sensor parameters on the characteristics of an inertial vertical gyroscope based on the Wiener filter.

Vertical Accuracy Effect Verification for Satellite Imagery With Different GCPs

IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2017
This letter expands the block adjustment method by, respectively, adopting high-precision global positioning system (GPS) points, geoscience laser altimeter system (GLAS) data, and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM)-digital elevation model (DEM) as vertical control data. Block adjustment experiments were conducted with these control data, with 388
