THE VERTICAL DISTRIBUTION OF VOLVOX IN THE PLANKTON OF LAKE MONONA

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, 1918
On the morning of July 6, I9I6, Messrs. Birge and Juday, of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, noted a very peculiar condition, while collecting plankton samples from Lake Monona, Madison, Wisconsin. They found that there was a very decided stratum of Volvox colonies at a depth of three meters, while above and below this stratum the ...

Performance measurement and visualization on the refrigerant distribution in the vertical manifold of the microchannel tube heat exchanger [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This project studies the liquid refrigerant distribution of an intermediate vertical manifold in a multi-pass evaporator. A new test rig is designed and built to circulate R410A through the vertical microchannel manifold. Refrigerant is circulated into

Towards Defect Phase Diagrams: From Research Data Management to Automated Workflows

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A research data management infrastructure is presented for the systematic integration of heterogeneous experimental and simulation data required for defect phase diagrams. The approach combines openBIS with a companion application for large‐object storage, automated metadata extraction, provenance tracking and federated data access, thereby supporting ...

Performance Analysis of Abradable Coating Systems for Aircraft Gas Turbines

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Three CoNiCrAlY/YSZ/MgAl2O4 abradable liner configurations on a nickel‐superalloy are evaluated by thermal‐gradient cycling and incursion tests. Laser ablation of the bondcoat and/or Y2O3‐stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) intermediate layer increases mechanical interlocking and bonding for thick topcoats.

STRATIFYING DRIFT SAMPLER

open access: yesАмурский зоологический журнал, 2012
A new drift sampler construction and a procedure for its usage on stream sites with depth up to 0.6 m all year, and at deeper sites during the ice-cover period have been described.

Asymmetric Vertical Integration [PDF]

open access: yes
We examine vertical backward integration in a reducedform model of successive oligopolies. Our key findings are: (i) There may be asymmetric equilibria where some firms integrate and others remain separated, even if firms are symmetric initially; (ii ...

Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.

Vertical transmission of consumption behavior and the distribution of surnames [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This paper attempts to detect the existence of links in consumption preferences between generations. Preferences for consumption goods may be determined by the preferences of parents (vertical transmission) and/or by preferences arising from the environment (horizontal transmission).

Vertical Integration, Institutional Determinants and Impact: Evidence from China [PDF]

open access: yes
Where legal systems and market forces enforce contracts inadequately, vertical integration can circumvent these transaction difficulties. But, such environments often also feature highly interventionist government, and even corruption.

Rafting of Ni‐Based Superalloys Under Multiaxial Load as Understood by Phase‐Field Simulations and Critical Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Phase‐field simulations coupled with dislocation‐density‐based crystal plasticity modeling reproduce γ′ rafting behavior in single‐crystal Ni‐based superalloys under varied loading conditions. The model captures both macroscopic creep and microscopic morphology evolution, with results matching high‐temperature creep experiments.
