Stryker Osteonics: Prosthetic Knee Joint [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We examine, within a simple bearing model of a knee joint that only consideres pure sliding, the effect of the presence of a small vertical hole in the load area on the fluid film properties.

Somatic mutational landscape in von Hippel–Lindau familial hemangioblastoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The causes of central nervous system (CNS) hemangioblastoma in Von Hippel–Lindau (vHL) disease are unclear. We used Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) on familial hemangioblastoma to investigate events that underlie tumor development. Our findings suggest that VHL loss creates a permissive environment for tumor formation, while additional alterations ...

Design of a load carriage system oriented to reduce acceleration forces when carrying a backpack

open access: yesRevista Facultad de Ingeniería Universidad de Antioquia, 2020
In military life, load carriage is an unavoidable part of field operations which is the reason why soldiers often make use of a military backpack. Infantry soldiers usually carry loads weighting more than 30% of their body weight.

Impact Loadings on Vertical Walls in Directional Seas

open access: yesCoastal Engineering 1998, 1999
Recent research under PROVERBS has demonstrated that wave impact loads can cause damage or failure of caisson or blockwork breakwaters. Research studies of wave loadings, pulsating or impact, have generally used only 2 - dimensional wave flume experiments, and so most design methods are strongly biased towards 2-d .

CD47 promotes mitogen‐activated protein kinase and epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition molecular programs to drive prometastatic phenotypes in non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Beyond its role in immune evasion, this study identified that CD47 drives tumor‐intrinsic signaling in non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Transcriptomic profiling and functional studies revealed that CD47 regulates cell adhesion, migration, and metastasis through an ERK–EMT signaling axis.

Tactile whole-field imaging sensor on photoelasticity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The paper describes a whole-field imaging sensor developed on the principles of photoelasticity. The sensor produces colored fringe patterns when load is applied on the contacting surface.

Benchmark footbridge for vibration serviceability assessment under vertical component of pedestrian load [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Vibration serviceability criteria are governing the design and determining the cost of modern, slender footbridges. Efficient and reliable evaluation of dynamic performance of these structures usually requires a detailed insight into the structural ...

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐

Wheat Loads and Vertical Pressure Distribution in a Full-scale Bin Part I — Filling [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
Flat-bottom cylindrical grain bins are subjected to unique loads and pressures during the filling process. The vertical and lateral loads imposed on a bin wall and the vertical load on a bin floor by wheat during filling were measured.

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.
