The Effect of Non-Breaking Wave Mixing on Ocean Modeling in the South China Sea

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
This study investigates the wave-induced vertical mixing mechanism and systematically compares the application of two non-breaking wave parameterization schemes (Bv and Pw) in oceanic numerical simulations of the South China Sea, according to two key ...

Role of Salinity-Induced Barrier Layer in Air-Sea Interaction During the Intensification of a Typhoon

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
A pronounced increase in the intensification of Typhoon Bavi in 2020 was detected when the typhoon passed over the Changjiang plume in the northern East China Sea.

Refinement of amino‐acid conformation vs. difference density maps in time‐resolved serial femtosecond crystallography data analysis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The dFoCC pipeline starts with observed DED and resting‐state coordinates, which are then used to generate a library of triggered states. Correlation analysis of the calculated DED features of each candidate vs observed DED permits quantitative evaluation of candidate structural quality.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Jet mixing of water in crude oil pipelines [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
The jet mixing of water in crude oil pipelines by single nozzle and multi-nozzle mixers was studied by dividing the mixing domain into to three regions. the penetration. near field and farfield regions.

Evolution‐guided yeast complementation reveals functional differences in human PSPH variants

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Ancient genomes can help guide which human genetic variants are tested experimentally. This study applies that idea to PSPH, a gene involved in serine biosynthesis, and uses high‐throughput yeast complementation to compare variant function. The findings reveal measurable differences among selected alleles and illustrate the value of evolution‐guided ...

Diapycnal Mixing and Tracer Dispersion in a Terrain‐Following Coordinate Model

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems
Diapycnal mixing, driven by small‐scale turbulence, is crucial for the global ocean circulation, particularly for the upwelling of deep water masses.

Application of Vortex Induced Vibration Systems to Improve Vertical Mixing and Create Light/Dark Cycles for Enhanced Algal Biomass Productivity in Raceway Ponds

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2023
Limited light availability due to insufficient vertical mixing is one of the main drawbacks of raceway ponds (RWPs), the most common type of microalgae cultivation system.

Turbulent vertical mixing in hot exoplanet atmospheres [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society: Letters, 2019
Abstract Turbulent vertical transport driven by double-diffusive shear instabilities is identified as likely important in hot exoplanet atmospheres. In hot Jupiter atmospheres, the resulting vertical mixing appears sufficient to alleviate the nightside cold trap, thus facilitating the maintenance of nocturnal clouds on these planets. The

Protocol for quantifying miRNA trafficking across the endosomal membrane

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An in vitro protocol measures miRNA uptake into endosomes isolated from mammalian cell extracts, which are free of subcellular contaminants. Performed at 37 °C in the presence of ATP, it ensures the import of single‐stranded miRNA into the endosomal lumen.
