Climatology of Vertical Wind Shear over the Tropical Atlantic

Journal of Climate, 2006
Abstract The spatiotemporal variability of the 200–850-hPa vertical wind shear over the tropical Atlantic is examined for a period of 46 yr. This work extends and updates past studies by considering a longer data record as well as a tropospheric-deep measure of vertical wind shear.

Impact of vertical wind shear on wind turbine performance

2017 International Conference on Circuit ,Power and Computing Technologies (ICCPCT), 2017
This is paper presents significance of vertical wind shear. Voltage flicker that may be initiated in the output of the horizontal axis upwind wind turbine located at any given site for a given tower height and blade length. Vertical wind shear is one of the important parameters which instigate voltage flicker in wind turbine output voltage.

Statistics on Vertical Wind Shear over Oceans

Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 1984
Abstract Statistics on boundary layer vertical wind shear were gathered from rawinsonde soundings taken from three small islands and one weather ship. These soundings show a high correlation between surface and 1829 m altitude wind directions. Wind speeds also were vertically correlated except at one tropical station where the winds were light.

Effect of vertical wind shear on flicker in wind farm

2013 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference: South Asia Satellite (GHTC-SAS), 2013
Scarcity of electric power, in developing countries like India, demands more generation of electric power. The conventional means of generating power are much time consuming and hence it is necessary to utilize renewable energy sources like wind, solar etc. Wind is intermittent in nature.

Characteristics for wind energy and wind turbines by considering vertical wind shear

Journal of Central South University, 2015
The probability distributions of wind speeds and the availability of wind turbines were investigated by considering the vertical wind shear. Based on the wind speed data at the standard height observed at a wind farm, the power-law process was used to simulate the wind speeds at a hub height of 60 m.

On the Classification of Vertical Wind Shear as Directional Shear versus Speed Shear

Weather and Forecasting, 2006
Abstract Vertical wind shear is commonly classified as “directional” or “speed” shear. In this note, these classifications are reviewed and their relevance discussed with respect to the dynamics of convective storms. In the absence of surface drag, storm morphology and evolution only depend on the shape and length of a hodograph, on ...

Effects of Vertical Wind Shear

2011
The effects of vertical wind shear on convective development have been examined for decades (e.g., Pastushkov 1975; Corbosiero and Molinari 2002; Lang et al. 2007; Ueno 2007). The delayed initiation of convection is associated with a strong vertical wind shear (e.g., Xu et al. 1992).

Sixth order model of wind turbine voltage flicker considering vertical wind shear

2017 International Conference on Circuit ,Power and Computing Technologies (ICCPCT), 2017
Diverse models of voltage flicker are established by researchers. Each model has its own disadvantage. In this paper analysis of various models is done. The models consist of various wind turbine parameters like wind turbine tower height, surface roughness of the region, building height if the turbine is mounted on a building or hill height and slope ...

How Does Vertical Wind Shear Influence Entrainment in Squall Lines?

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2021
AbstractThe influence of vertical wind shear on updraft entrainment in squall lines is not well understood. To address this knowledge gap, a suite of high-resolution idealized numerical model simulations of squall lines were run in various vertical wind shear (hereafter “shear”) environments to study the effects of shear on entrainment in deep ...

Does Low-level Vertical Wind Shear Matter for Hail Production?

2023
<p>Vertical wind shear (or more precisely, bulk wind vector magnitude differences between specified altitudes) has long been used for severe convective storm science and forecasting, in part owing to its relative success in correlating to various storm behaviors and hazards.
