Effect of vertical wind shear on the growth of convective clouds

Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 1967
AbstractThe relationship between vertical wind shear and the vertical extent of convective clouds is examined. In order to take into consideration the movement of the cloud, a ‘Relative Top Shear’ (RTS) is defined. Radar data and upper winds at some Indian stations in different seasons have been studied and a comparison made between RTS at different ...

Estimation of Vertical Wind Shear from Infrared and Microwave Radiances.

1982
Abstract : Linear regression estimates of radiosonde observed vertical wind shears between mandatory levels were made, using radiance gradients obtained via the TIROS-N satellite as predictors in a pilot experiment based on about 200-500 observations. The best results were obtained for shears between 850 mb and a level in the upper troposphere such as ...

The influence of environmental vertical wind shear on hurricane eye formation

2010
Studies of tropical storms recognize eye formation as an important indicator of intensification toward a mature cyclone. However, the reason why some tropical storms form eyes while others do not is not well understood. Our goal is to identify large-scale environmental conditions that favor or inhibit hurricane eye formation.

Investigation of vertical wind shear characteristics using 50m meteorological tower data

2017
Wind measurement is important for estimating wind energy potential, but it is relatively cost-intensive and often conducted at a narrow height from the ground level. The typical range of most turbine hub heights is from 30-50 m or even higher. Extrapolation on wind data thus becomes necessary to estimate the wind speed at different heights.
