The limiting effect of genome size on xylem vessel diameter is shifted by environmental pressures in seed plants

open access: yesPlant Direct, 2022
Current and previous studies have extensively studied the physiological and ecological consequences of genome size (GS) on plants because of the limiting effect of GS on cell size.

Volatile Relay Biosensing and Mobile Phone Imaging for Detection of Influenza Virus

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Detection of volatile organic compounds is performed via a coupled enzymatic assay with mobile phone detection of the signal. Specific application demonstrated herein is the detection of influenza virus, across multiple levels of biological complexity, up to patient‐derived samples.

Mineral Deposition From Liquid Precursors Triggered by Complementary Polyelectrolytes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Polyelectrolyte additives can delay or prevent crystal nucleation in supersaturated solutions of insoluble mineral salts such as calcium carbonate. This work reports that adding a second, oppositely‐charged polyelectrolyte leads to immediate mineral crystallization from such metastable solutions.

Wearable Kirigami‐Apertured Capacitive Sensors for Continuous Cardiac Volumetric Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A wearable kirigami‐apertured carbon nanotube‐paper composite (K‐CPC) capacitive sensor enables cardiac volumetric monitoring. The kirigami process creates a central aperture with cantilevered fibers that confine the electric field, enhancing both sensitivity and lateral resolution.

Hydrogel Microtube Drug Carrier for Catheter‐Based Intravascular Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This paper proposes hydrogel microtube carriers composed of barium alginate gel, enabling long‐term vascular retention without interrupting blood flow. Intravascular treatments have long been attracting attention for therapeutic efficacy, yet practical delivery methods remained unestablished.

A Novel Perfused Full‐Thickness Human Skin Microphysiological System for Modeling Injury, Regeneration, Tumor Pathophysiology, and Therapeutics Development

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
What if human skin could remain fully alive and functional outside the body for weeks? A New Alternative Method (NAM) based on a vascularized full‐thickness skin microphysiological system achieves precisely this, preserving native vasculature, resident immunity, and metabolic activity for up to three weeks, while faithfully recapitulating radiation ...

Vessel diameter changes during the cardiac cycle [PDF]

open access: yesEye, 1994
Retinal vessel diameter, which is an important parameter in blood flow measurement, is affected by pulsation during the cardiac cycle and by vasomotion. This project studied these changes by analysing three monochromatic fundus photographs taken in eight arbitrary parts of the cardiac cycle of 10 healthy subjects.

Blood vessel diameter in glaucoma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Glaucoma is a leading cause of visual disability in the UK and major referral reason between high street optometry and hospital based ophthalmology. The standard optometric tests used to determine necessity of referral are currently leading to a high false positive burden on glaucoma clinics.
