Psychophysics of vibrotactile stimulation

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1983
The effects of a wide range of stimulus parameters upon the psychophysical responses of subjects are important to an understanding of the functional characteristics of neural systems that underlie responses to cutaneous mechanical stimulation and the interactions that may occur between these systems.

Traveling vibrotactile wave - a new vibrotactile rendering method for mobile devices

IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, 2009
The use of a vibration motor is recently receiving attention for haptic interaction with mobile devices. An important aspect of haptic interaction using the vibration motor in mobile devices is to compute and to generate vibrotactile information in response to user's input.

Vibrotactile masking through the body

Experimental Brain Research, 2014
Touches on one hand or forearm can affect tactile sensitivity at contralateral locations on the opposite side of the body. These interactions suggest an intimate connection between the two sides of the body. Here, we explore the effect of masking not across the body but through the body by measuring the effect of a masking stimulus on the back on the ...

Prediction of vibrotactile masking functions

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1982
Threshold shifts for the detection of vibrotactile test stimuli were determined as a function of the intensity of a masker. The masking stimulus, narrow-band noise centered at 275 Hz, and the test stimulus, a 15-, 50-, 80-, or 300-Hz sinusoidal burst, were applied to the same site on the thenar eminence of the hand.

Laser-Powered Vibrotactile Rendering

Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies, 2023
We investigate the feasibility of a vibrotactile device that is both battery-free and electronic-free. Our approach leverages lasers as a wireless power transfer and haptic control mechanism, which can drive small actuators commonly used in AR/VR and mobile applications with DC or AC signals.

Vibrotactile TV for immersive experience

Signal and Information Processing Association Annual Summit and Conference (APSIPA), 2014 Asia-Pacific, 2014
Audio and video are two powerful media forms to shorten the distance between audience/viewer and actors or players in the TV and films. The recent research shows that today people are using more and more multimedia contents on mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones.

Adaptive Equalization of Vibrotactile Actuators

IEEE Transactions on Haptics, 2021
In order to provide convincing artifical touch sensations, humans should be presented with high quality haptic stimuli. In the vibrotactile domain, signals are usually displayed through mechanical actuators. Current high quality actuators exhibit a high dynamic range and have the ability to display a wide range of frequencies.

A ratio code for vibrotactile pitch

Somatosensory & Motor Research, 1998
Subjective impressions of pitch for 80 different sinusoidal vibrotactile stimuli delivered to the index finger were measured by free magnitude estimation in four subjects. In three of the subjects, pitch at a given frequency decreased as stimulus amplitude increased.

Vibrotactile perception in Dupuytren disease

Journal of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery, 2020
Dupuytren disease (DD) has been associated with enlarged Pacinian corpuscles (PCs) and with PCs having a greater number of lamellae. Based on these associations, we hypothesized that subjects with DD would have altered sensitivity to high-frequency vibrations and that the changes would be more prominent at 250 Hz, where healthy subjects demonstrate the

Vibrotactile Stimulation

British Journal of Occupational Therapy, 1990
Many occupational therapists appear to be struggling to provide a holistic treatment programme for people with multiple handicaps. A number of the accepted methods of therapy or intervention techniques for mental handicap facilitate the individual to learn by handling and manipulating and are thus not so readily accessible to those with multiple ...
