Decay in the effect of vibrotactile masking
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1996Vibrotactile forward masking experiments were conducted on the thenar eminence of the hand to determine the time course of masking in the Pacinian (P) or a non-Pacinian (NP I) channel. Brief masking and test stimuli that contained energy centered either below 27 or at 500 Hz were used to preferentially activate the NP I or P channels, respectively ...

Vibrotactile Emotions on a Mobile Phone
2008 IEEE International Conference on Signal Image Technology and Internet Based Systems, 2008Vibrotactile sensations to sight and sound cues on mobile handsets make content more realistic, fun and operation more intuitive. An intuitive method to render human facial feature for visually impaired is evaluated for effectiveness. In current system, the vibration of a mobile phone is used to provide emotion information based on human lip?s shape ...

Perceptual dimensions of vibrotactile actuators
2018 IEEE Haptics Symposium (HAPTICS), 2018The objective of the present research was to determine how variations in the signals generated by different vibrotactile actuators are perceived and which features are judged as being distinctive. For this purpose, three different types of actuator were used to generate signals that varied in amplitude, waveform and frequency.

Discrimination of Concurrent Vibrotactile Stimuli
2008We investigated the detection of vibrotactile targets against a background of concurrent non-targets, presented by eight tactors equally distributed in a horizontal band around the torso. Stimuli consisted of temporal activation patterns. Single targets (T) were presented among two to seven non-targets (N).

Neural mechanisms in vibrotactile adaptation
Journal of Neurophysiology, 19881. Peripheral and central neural contributions to vibrotactile adaptation were investigated in decerebrate or anesthetized cats by recording from sensory nerve fibers associated with Pacinian corpuscle (PC) receptors and from central neurons of the dorsal column nuclei that receive their input from vibration-sensitive receptors of the forelimb ...

Vibrotactile Learning and the Menstrual Cycle
Perceptual and Motor Skills, 19713 groups of nulliparous -women aged from 17 to 22 yr. learned a 9-element vibroractile code through the skin of the left wrist. The groups were designated premenstrual, postmenstrual, and intermenstrual. There was a significant practice effect over 10 trials and a significant difference between menstrual groups.

Vibrotactile feedback for collision awareness
Proceedings of the 2015 British HCI Conference, 2015Magnetic Confinement Fusion machines called tokamak (e.g. ITER and WEST projects), as well as many industrial projects, require a high integration level in a confined volume. The feasibility of installation and maintenance by an operator has to be considered in the early stages of the design.

Temporal course of vibrotactile imagery
NeuroReport, 2007This study examined the temporal courses of imagery processes by having participants imagining vibrotactile sensation as if perceived by the right-hand second finger. The results indicate that the imagery condition elicited a less negative going N400 and then a less positive going P600 than the control condition (perceived without imagining).

A vibrotactile approach to tactile rendering
The Visual Computer, 2006While moving our fingertip over a fine surface we experience a sensation that gives us an idea of its properties. A satisfactory simulation of this feeling is still an unsolved problem. In this paper, we describe a rendering strategy based on vibrations that play an important role in the tactile exploration of fine surfaces.

Design of Dynamic Vibrotactile Textures
IEEE Transactions on Haptics, 2010This paper describes a method for creating virtual textures without force feedback by using a simple motion sensor and a single vibrotactile actuator. It is based on wavetable synthesis driven by the user's hand movements. The output of the synthesis is rendered with the tactile actuator attached in a hand-held box together with the motion sensor.
