Phylogeny of the vipers of the Caucasus (Reptilia, Viperidae)

Phylogenetic relationships for five taxa of Palearctic vipers (genus Vipera) from the Caucasian region were revealed by cladistic analyses of separate and combined morphological and biochemical characters. The different data sets yielded largely congruent cladograms. Vipera berus from Sweden was included as an ingroup and V. aspis was used for outgroup

Viperidae Envenomation in India

The estimated incidence of venomous snakebites in India is around 300,000 annually and the overall mortality is between 30,000 and 50,000. The majority of this is due to Viperidae envenomation. There is a lack of consensus regarding the management protocol. The symptoms, signs, diagnosis, and management of Viperidae envenomation are discussed.

A dimorphic pair of chromosomes was found among the macrochromosomes in mitosis of females ofVipera berus L. It corresponds to a pair of medium-sized chromosomes in the male. The conclusion is drawn that females are heterogametic (ZW-type), males being homogametic (ZZ-type).

Mitochondrial genome ofProtobothrops mangshanensis(Squamata: Viperidae: Crotalinae)

Protobothrops maolanensis was recently described from Guizhou, southwestern China. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of P. maolanensis had been determined. The circle genome with the 17,231 bp total length contained 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes and 2 control regions.
