Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Origins, Importance and Genetic Stability of the Prototype Strains Gilliam, Karp and Kato of Orientia tsutsugamushi

open access: yesTropical Medicine and Infectious Disease, 2019
Scrub typhus, a chigger-borne febrile illness, occurs primarily in countries of the Asia-Pacific rim and islands of the Western Pacific. The etiologic agent is the obligate intracellular rickettsial bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi.

An optimised method for the production of MERS-CoV spike expressing viral pseudotypes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The production and use of pseudotyped viral particles is widely established for many viruses, and applications in the fields of serology and vaccine development are manifold.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Using the Influenza Patient-reported Outcome (FLU-PRO) diary to evaluate symptoms of influenza viral infection in a healthy human challenge model

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2018
Background In clinical studies involving a healthy volunteer human challenge model, a valid and reliable measure to assess the evolution of patient-reported symptom type and severity following viral exposure is necessary.

Rapid Evolution of Viral RNA Genomes [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Nutrition, 1997
Mutation rates during RNA virus replication are several orders of magnitude larger than those operating during replication of cellular DNA. This results in the continuous generation of mutant genomes and in their rating in competition with other variants present and arising in the population.

The neural crest‐associated gene ERRFI1 is involved in melanoma progression and resistance toward targeted therapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
ERRFI1, a neural crest (NC)‐associated gene, was upregulated in melanoma and negatively correlated with the expression of melanocytic differentiation markers and the susceptibility of melanoma cells toward BRAF inhibitors (BRAFi). Knocking down ERRFI1 significantly increased the sensitivity of melanoma cells to BRAFi.

Evolution and virulence of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus following in vitro and in vivo propagation

open access: yesScientific Reports
Practice of inoculating porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in piglets generating feedback material might influence the genetic evolution and attenuation of PEDV.

AUTO-TUNE: selecting the distance threshold for inferring HIV transmission clusters

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioinformatics
Molecular surveillance of viral pathogens and inference of transmission networks from genomic data play an increasingly important role in public health efforts, especially for HIV-1.

Begomovirus quasispecies adapt to hosts by exploring different sequence space without changing their consensus sequences [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Geminiviruses possess single-stranded circular DNA genomes that depend on cellular polymerases for replication in the host nucleus. In plant hosts, geminivirus populations behave as ensembles of mutant and recombinant genomes.
