The adrenal cortex and virilization
Clinics in Endocrinology and Metabolism, 1985The physiological control of adrenal androgen secretion has not been definitively established. However, there is evidence to suggest that a dexamethasone-suppressible factor other than ACTH may have a specific role to play. The majority of patients with idiopathic hirsutism (hirsutism associated with regular menstruation) have findings suggestive of ...

Virilization associated with choriocarcinoma
Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, 1995We demonstrate here two autopsy-proven cases of virilization associated with choriocarcinoma. The first patient was a 27-year-old woman with a 7-year history of metastatic choriocarcinoma who presented with left hemiparesis and virilization. Serum testosterone concentration was 18 nmol/l, free testosterone 471 pmol/l, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate ...

VIRILIZATION ACCOMPANYING HEPATOBLASTOMA
Pediatrics, 1963A case of hepatoblastoma associated with virilization in a 3-year-old boy is presented. Three additional cases culled from the literature are discussed to point out the striking similarities in this group. Their distinctive character allows differentiation of this disease from other causes of isosexual precocity in the male child.

A 71-year-old woman, 26 years post-menopause, presented with virilization. Facial hirsuties, non-hereditary frontal balding, voice changes, male escutcheon, and mild clitorimegaly accompanied a right adnexal mass. Blood hormone studies showed testosterone 430 ng/dL, FSH 118 mIU/mL, and LH 210 mIU/mL.

Hirsutism and Virilism in Women
1987Hirsutism in women may be defined as excessive thick (terminal) hair growth in facial and body regions. It is one of the early manifestations of virilization that correlate closely with elevated testosterone production. Testosterone production rates in normal women average 0.2 mg/day, with 25% secreted by the ovaries, 25% by the adrenals, and 50 ...
