Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

CDK11 inhibition induces cytoplasmic p21WAF1 splice variant by p53 stabilisation and SF3B1 inactivation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CDK11 inhibition stabilises the tumour suppressor p53 and triggers the production of an alternative p21WAF1 splice variant p21L, through the inactivation of the spliceosomal protein SF3B1. Unlike the canonical p21WAF1 protein, p21L is localised in the cytoplasm and has reduced cell cycle‐blocking activity.

A C0 Nonconforming Virtual Element Method for the Kirchhoff Plate Obstacle Problem

open access: yesAxioms
This paper investigates a novel C0 nonconforming virtual element method (VEM) for solving the Kirchhoff plate obstacle problem, which is described by a fourth-order variational inequality (VI) of the first kind.

Perspectives in educating molecular pathologists on liquid biopsy: Toward integrative, equitable, and decentralized precision oncology

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Liquid biopsy enables minimally invasive, real‐time molecular profiling through analysis of circulating biomarkers in biological fluids. This Perspective highlights the importance of training pathologists through integrative educational programs, such as the European Masters in Molecular Pathology, to ensure effective and equitable implementation of ...

A virtual element method for transversely isotropic elasticity [PDF]

open access: yesComputational Mechanics, 2019
This work studies the approximation of plane problems concerning transversely isotropic elasticity, using a low-order Virtual Element Method (VEM), with a focus on near-incompressibility and near-inextensibility. Additionally, both homogeneous problems, in which the plane of isotropy is fixed; and non-homogeneous problems, in which the fibre direction ...

Homogenization of composite materials reinforced with unidirectional fibres with complex curvilinear cross section: a virtual element approach

open access: yesMathematics in Engineering
The paper presents an augmented curvilinear virtual element method to determine homogenized in-plane shear material moduli of long-fibre reinforced composites in the framework of asymptotic homogenization method.

Developing evidence‐based, cost‐effective P4 cancer medicine for driving innovation in prevention, therapeutics, patient care and reducing healthcare inequalities

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The cancer problem is increasing globally with projections up to the year 2050 showing unfavourable outcomes in terms of incidence and cancer‐related deaths. The main challenges are prevention, improved therapeutics resulting in increased cure rates and enhanced health‐related quality of life.

Virtual element methods for Biot–Kirchhoff poroelasticity

open access: yesMathematics of Computation
This paper analyses conforming and nonconforming virtual element formulations of arbitrary polynomial degrees on general polygonal meshes for the coupling of solid and fluid phases in deformable porous plates. The governing equations consist of one fourth-order equation for the transverse displacement of the middle surface coupled with a second-order ...

Virtual element approximations of the time-fractional nonlinear convection-diffusion equation on polygonal meshes

open access: yesMathematics in Engineering
We extend the Virtual Element Method to a two-dimensional unsteady nonlinear convection-diffusion equation characterized by a fractional-order derivative with respect to the time variable.
