Host restriction factors in retroviral infection: promises in virus-host interaction

open access: yesRetrovirology, 2012
Retroviruses have an intricate life cycle. There is much to be learned from studying retrovirus-host interactions. Among retroviruses, the primate lentiviruses have one of the more complex genome structures with three categories of viral genes ...

M148R and M149R are two virulence factors for myxoma virus pathogenesis in the European rabbit [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Myxoma virus (MYXV), a member of the Poxviridae family, is the agent responsible for myxomatosis, a fatal disease in the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

Mosquito Saliva Subunit Vaccine Enhances Efficacy of VLP Vaccines Against Zika and Chikungunya Viruses

open access: yesVaccines
Background/Objectives: Mosquito-borne viruses cause substantial global morbidity and mortality. Mosquito saliva, secreted during biting, facilitates blood feeding and can enhance virus infection.

Evidence of viral adaptation to HLA class I-restricted immune pressure in chronic hepatitis C virus infection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Cellular immune responses are an important correlate of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection outcome. These responses are governed by the host's human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type, and HLA-restricted viral escape mutants are a critical aspect of this host ...

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

The impact of cytomegalovirus coinfection on tuberculosis in the mouse model

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases
Background Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, with 10.6 million new cases and 1.3 million deaths annually. HIV coinfection is a well-known risk factor in high-burden regions, but emerging evidence suggests that other viral ...

Influenza virus activation of the interferon system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This study was supported by the Wellcome Trust (grant number 087751/A/08/Z) and the Medical Research Council (grant number G0700848).The host interferon (IFN) response represents one of the first barriers that influenza viruses must surmount in order to ...

A high-throughput yeast two-hybrid protocol to determine virus-host protein interactions

open access: yes, 2022
S.1-15The yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) system is a powerful method to identify and analyze binary protein interactions. In the field of virology, the Y2H system has significantly increased our knowledge of structure and function of viral proteins by ...
