Engineering virus resistance in agricultural crops
Plant Molecular Biology, 1989Plant viral genomes are relatively small and in the past decade many have been characterized at the molecular level. This has prompted research into the development of virus resistance based on interference with the viral multiplication cycle by teh introduction of viral sequences into the plant genome. Several strategies have been tested.

Resistance of Visna Virus to Interferon
Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1978Visna is a slow infection of sheep caused by a retrovirus. The persistence of virus despite the immune response of the host is best explained by restricted genetic expression of the virus and consequently prolonged periods of residence inside cells.

Zidovudine Resistance of Human Immunodeficiency Virus
Clinical Infectious Diseases, 1990The observation that human immunodeficiency virus resistant to zidovudine can be isolated from patients with AIDS or AIDS-related complex during prolonged zidovudine treatment was made with a plaque reduction assay employing a CD4-expressing HeLa cell line.

Strategies for virus resistance in plants
Trends in Genetics, 1989Virus infections of plants are controlled and suppressed naturally by the action of resistance genes encoded within the plant, by interactions between viruses or even as a result of the activity of functions encoded by or associated with the virus itself.

Artificial MicroRNAs for Plant Virus Resistance
2012RNA silencing is a natural plant defense system against foreign genetic elements including viruses. This natural antiviral mechanism has been adopted to develop virus-resistant plants by the expression of long stretches of viral sequences in perfectly paired double-stranded or stem-loop forms which, in turn, are processed into virus-specific small ...

Broad virus resistance in transgenic plants
Trends in Biotechnology, 2003Viruses are significant threats to agricultural crops worldwide and the limited sources of natural resistance warrant the development of novel resistance sources. Several methods of transgenic protection have been successfully applied, including protein- and RNA-mediated approaches. Increased understanding of the molecular biology of virus infection is
