Early-life stress induces visceral hypersensitivity in mice

Neuroscience Letters, 2012
Early-life stress is a risk factor for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a common and debilitating functional gastrointestinal disorder that is often co-morbid with stress-related psychiatric disorders. In the rat, maternal separation (MS) stress has been shown to induce visceral hypersensitivity in adulthood and thus has become a useful model of IBS ...

Irritable pouch syndrome is characterized by visceral hypersensitivity

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, 2011
Irritable pouch syndrome (IPS) is a functional disorder in patients with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA), which presents with symptoms in the absence of structural abnormalities of the pouch. Thus, it resembles other functional disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome characterized by visceral hypersensitivity in the presence of normal rectal ...

P2X receptor-mediated visceral hyperalgesia in a rat model of chronic visceral hypersensitivity

Gut, 2008
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterised by abdominal pain and bloating in association with altered bowel movements. Its pathogenesis and the underlying molecular mechanisms of visceral hyperalgesia remain elusive. Recent studies of somatic and other visceral pain models suggest a role for purinergic signalling

Visceral Hypersensitivity in Functional Dyspepsia (FD): Therapeutic Approaches to FD Based on Suppression of Visceral Hypersensitivity

2018
Visceral hypersensitivity is an important mechanism in the development of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID), including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), noncardiac disorder, and functional dyspepsia (FD). In pathophysiology of FD, visceral hypersensitivity in gastric distension is a main mechanism in addition to gastric motor dysfunction ...

Visceral hypersensitivity and impaired accommodation in refractory diabetic gastroparesis

Neurogastroenterology & Motility, 2008
Abstract  The pathophysiology of persistent gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in patients with diabetic gastroparesis is poorly understood. Our aim was to evaluate gastric sensation and accommodation to a meal in patients with diabetic gastroparesis and refractory symptoms.

Review article: visceral hypersensitivity.

Alimentary pharmacology & therapeutics, 2003
Visceral hypersensitivity is highly prevalent in all functional bowel disorders. Most also demonstrate wider patterns of somatic referral of intestinal pain or discomfort. This hypersensitivity may explain the symptoms as the sensitive gut can be more easily provoked by normal or abnormal motor events in the gut.
