Can Visual Acuity Be Reliably Measured at Home? Validation of Telemedicine Remote Computerised Visual Acuity Measurements

open access: yesBritish and Irish Orthoptic Journal, 2021
Purpose: The recent pandemic has identified the need for telemedicine assessment of ophthalmology patients. A vital component of such assessment is visual acuity (VA) measurement.

Initial Findings on Visual Acuity Thresholds in an African Elephant (\u3cem\u3eLoxodonta africana\u3c/em\u3e) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
There are only a few published examinations of elephant visual acuity. All involved Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) and found visual acuity to be between 8′ and 11′ of arc for a stimulus near the tip of the trunk, equivalent to a 0.50 cm gap, at a ...

Dynamic Visual Acuity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We present a review on the visual ability to discriminate ¿ ne details of moving objects (DVA: Dynamic Visual Acuity), showing the most relevant differences, which have been attributed to this visual capacity in comparison to SVA (static visual acuity ...

Targeting rapid TKI‐induced AXL upregulation overcomes adaptive ERK reactivation and exerts antileukemic effects in FLT3/ITD acute myeloid leukemia

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Adaptive ERK reactivation hinders FLT3 tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment in FLT3/ITD acute myeloid leukemia. Here, we report that FLT3 TKI treatment rapidly induces AXL expression and upregulation that is temporally associated with the adaptive ERK reactivation.

A Virtual Reality Game to Improve Physical and Cognitive Acuity [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
We present the Virtual Human Benchmark (VHB) game to evaluate and improve physical and cognitive acuity. VHB simulates in 3D the BATAK lightboard game, which is designed to improve physical reaction and hand-eye coordination, on the \textit{Oculus Rift} and \textit{Quest} headsets.

Investigating the association between schizophrenia and distance visual acuity: Mendelian randomisation study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
BACKGROUND: Increased rates of visual impairment are observed in people with schizophrenia. AIMS: We assessed whether genetically predicted poor distance acuity is causally associated with schizophrenia, and whether genetically predicted schizophrenia is

TOMM20 as a driver of cancer aggressiveness via oxidative phosphorylation, maintenance of a reduced state, and resistance to apoptosis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
TOMM20 increases cancer aggressiveness by maintaining a reduced state with increased NADH and NADPH levels, oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), and apoptosis resistance while reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Conversely, CRISPR‐Cas9 knockdown of TOMM20 alters these cancer‐aggressive traits.

Optimal methods for estimating sports vision in kendo athletes

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
This study investigated whether the eight standard tests of sports vision used in Japan appropriately reflect sports vision; whether all eight tests are necessary; and if not, which combination yields the optimal model.

Escape from TGF‐β‐induced senescence promotes aggressive hallmarks in epithelial hepatocellular carcinoma cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Chronic TGF‐β exposure drives epithelial HCC cells from a senescent state to a TGF‐β resistant mesenchymal phenotype. This transition is characterized by the loss of Smad3‐mediated signaling, escape from senescence, enhanced invasiveness and metastatic potential, and upregulation of key resistance modulators such as MARK1 and GRM8, ultimately promoting
