Statistical analysis of a comprehensive list of visual binaries [PDF]

open access: yesBaltic Astronomy, 24, 367 (2015), 2016
Visual binary stars are the most abundant class of observed binaries. The most comprehensive list of data on visual binaries compiled recently by cross-matching the largest catalogues of visual binaries allowed a statistical investigation of observational parameters of these systems.

Comparison of Gaia and Hipparcos parallaxes of close visual binary stars and the impact on determinations of their masses [PDF]

open access: greenPublications Astronomical Society of Australia, 2021
Precise measurement of the fundamental parameters of stellar systems, including mass and radius, depends critically on how well the stellar distances are known.

Application of Multiple-imputation-particle-filter for Parameter Estimation of Visual Binary Stars with Incomplete Observations

open access: hybridAnnual Conference of the PHM Society, 2016
In visual binary stars, mass estimation can be accomplished through the study of their orbital parameters –Kepler’s Third Law establishes a strict mathematical relation between orbital period, orbit size (semi-major axis) and the system total mass ...

The 2001 US Naval Observatory Double Star CD-ROM. II. The Fifth Catalog of Orbits of Visual Binary Stars [PDF]

open access: bronze, 2001
The Fifth Catalog of Orbits of Visual Binary Stars continues the series of compilations of visual binary star orbits published by Finsen, Worley, and Heintz from the 1930s to the 1980s.

Searching for faint companions with VLTI/PIONIER. II. 92 main sequence stars from the Exozodi survey [PDF]

open access: yesA&A 570, A127 (2014), 2014
The Exozodi survey aims to determine the occurrence rate of bright exozodiacal discs around nearby main sequence stars using infrared interferometry. Although the Exozodi survey targets have been carefully selected to avoid the presence of binary stars, the results of this survey can still be biased by the presence of unidentified stellar companions ...

Visual Binary Stars with Partially Missing Data: Introducing Multiple Imputation in Astrometric Analysis [PDF]

open access: bronzePublications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 2019
Partial measurements of relative position are a relatively common event during the observation of visual binary stars. However, these observations are typically discarded when estimating the orbit of a visual pair.

The High Angular Resolution Multiplicity of Massive Stars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We present the results of a speckle interferometric survey of Galactic massive stars that complements and expands upon a similar survey made over a decade ago. The speckle observations were made with the KPNO and CTIO 4 m telescopes and USNO speckle camera, and they are sensitive to the detection of binaries in the angular separation regime between 0 ...

The primordial binary population II: Recovering the binary population for intermediate mass stars in Sco OB2 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We characterize the binary population in the young and nearby OB association Scorpius OB2 using available observations of visual, spectroscopic, and astrometric binaries with intermediate-mass primaries. We take into account observational biases by comparing the observations with simulated observations of model associations. The available data indicate

Multiplicity of late-type B stars with HgMn peculiarity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Observations at various wavelengths of late B-type stars exhibiting strong overabundances of the chemical elements Hg and Mn in their atmospheres indicate that these stars are frequently found in binary and multiple systems. We intend to study the multiplicity of this type of chemically peculiar stars, looking for visual companions in the range of ...

The Rate of Visual Binaries among the Brightest X-Ray Stars [PDF]

open access: bronzeThe Astrophysical Journal, 2002
Using the Tycho Double Star Catalogue and the Hipparcos Catalogue, I compare the rates of occurrence of resolved visual doubles among the brightest X-ray stars from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog (RASS-BSC) and generally in these two catalogs. A strong correlation between visual binarity and brightness in X-rays is found.
