Effect of vitamin B-6 nutrition and diabetes on vitamin B-6 metabolism
The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, 1997Vitamin B-6 content, some B-6 dependent enzymes, and alkaline phosphatase were examined in rat tissues subjected to different nutritional conditions and treated with or without streptozotocin. There was almost no B-6 in the plasma from the nutritionally deficient rat.

Response of vitamin B-6 content of muscle to changes in vitamin B-6 intake in men
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1991Previous reports indicated that in growing rats the vitamin B-6 pool in muscle was relatively stable during deficiency but increased in response to increased vitamin B-6 intake. To determine whether human muscle would show a similar response 10 college-aged males received a low vitamin B-6 diet (1.76 mumol/d) for 6 wk followed by 6 wk on a self ...

Vitamin B-6 has been reported to vary in concentration in human milk in response to changes in maternal intake of the vitamin. This study examined the effects of such changes on the breastfed infants' intake of vitamin B-6. Lactating mothers received 0, 2.5, 10.0 or 20.0 mg pyridoxine X HCl (PN X HCl) for 3 consecutive days in addition to dietary ...

The Journal of Nutrition, 1990
Over the past 50 yr there has been an increased awareness of the importance of vitamin B-6 in human nutrition. The knowledge base for evaluation of vitamin B-6 status has also increased. Indices for vitamin B-6 status can be separated into direct and indirect measures.

Vitamin B-6 Requirement of Growing Kittens
The Journal of Nutrition, 1989Two experiments were conducted to determine the vitamin B-6 requirement for growing kittens. Ten kittens were divided into two groups and given a purified diet containing 8.0 mg pyridoxine (PN)/kg diet (+PN) or a PN-free diet (-PN) for 11 wk. Daily body weight gain, food intake, weekly plasma free amino acids, plasma B-6 vitamers, urinary oxalate ...

Vitamin B-6 Deficiency in Germfree Rats
The Journal of Nutrition, 1977Germfree and conventional rats were used to investigate the influence of gut microflora upon vitamin B-6 deficiency. The body weights of conventional rats fed a vitamin B-6-deficient diet for more than 5 weeks plateaued, but the rats remained alive until the end of week 9 of deficiency.

Vitamin B-6 metabolism in premature infants
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1991The response of premature infants to intravenous pyridoxine or pyridoxal was studied by measuring serum and erythrocyte pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP). In the first study serum PLP was measured in 28 infants periodically through day 28. Infants less than 30 wk gestational age (GA) had no serum PLP response to the administration of pyridoxine.

Metabolism of Vitamin B-6 by Human Liver
The Journal of Nutrition, 1984The enzymes that metabolize vitamin B-6 were analyzed in liver biopsy samples from five patients without hepatic disease by using methods optimized for small samples. Pyridoxal kinase (EC 2.7.1.35) activities were 11.2 +/- 3.6 nmol/minute per gram of tissue and 0.16 +/- 0.05 nmol/minute per milligram of soluble protein (mean +/- SD); a clear dependence

Bioavailability of Vitamin B-6 in Pregnant Rats
The Journal of Nutrition, 1992The cause for reduced plasma pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) concentration during pregnancy is not well understood. In this study, nonpregnant (control) and pregnant rats were gavaged with [3H]pyridoxine for assessment of the intestinal absorption, tissue distribution, metabolic utilization and urinary excretion of the vitamin.
