Vitis berlandieri Planch. è una specie spontanea nelle regioni centromeridionali degli Stati Uniti. Venne introdotta in Europa nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento, durante l'intensa fase di ricerca di soluzioni ai gravi problemi a cui era andata incontro la viticoltura europea con la diffusione delle fitopatie provenienti dall'America.
