Vitreous Substitutes and Vitreous Surgery
1987For many years ophthalmologists thought that the vitreous should not be disturbed surgically. In the process of learning to deal with more complex cases of retinal detachment, instruments and techniques were devised to operate successfully on pathological vitreous that clearly interfered with retinal reattachment.

Fluorinated Oils as Experimental Vitreous Substitutes
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1986Two kinds of fluorinated oils (a fluorosilicone oil and a perfluoroether [Freon E15]) that have a higher density than water were evaluated as long-term vitreous substitutes. Vitreous compression using perfluoropropane gas was performed to create a space for the vitreous substitute in rabbit eyes.

Desired Properties of Polymeric Hydrogel Vitreous Substitute
Vitreous replacement is a commonly employed method for treating a range of ocular diseases, including posterior vitreous detachment, complex retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macular hole, and ocular trauma. Various clinical substitutes for vitreous include air, expandable gas, silicone oil, heavy silicone oil, and balanced salt solution ...

Proctase-treated collagen gels were injected into the vitreous cavity in 16 patients with retinal detachments that were considered inoperable by current scleral buckling techniques. Opacification of the gels and a transient inflammatory response were observed, but the vitreous cavity cleared within two weeks in 11 of the 16 eyes (69%).

Vitreous Substitutes in Vitreoretinal Surgeries
International Journal of Ophthalmic Pathology, 2016The vitreous is an inert, transparent, colorless, hydrophilic gelatinous structure that fills the space between the lens and the retina. It maintains the intra ocular pressure and is important in maintaining transparency of the media for maximum photon transmission to the retina.

Novel Supramolecular Hydrogels as Artificial Vitreous Substitutes
Macromolecular Symposia, 2010AbstractThe possibility of employing self‐healing gels as potential artificial vitreous substitutes is being explored. Advancement of traditional synthetic hydrogels as vitreous substitutes is hindered by their fragmentation upon injection into the vitreous cavity leading ultimately to inflammation. Preliminary work involved developing first generation

Experimental Vitreous Substitutes

[Artificial vitreous body: Strategies for vitreous body substitutes].
Der Ophthalmologe : Zeitschrift der Deutschen Ophthalmologischen Gesellschaft, 2016Although numerous advances have been made in technology and techniques of pars plana vitrectomy and tamponades, there are still unsolved issues, such as proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), multiple retinal breaks and persistent hypotonia. All available internal tamponades (e.g, gases, oils and fluorocarbons) are hydrophobic, so they approximate the ...
