Linguistic and Musical Syntax Processing in Autistic and Non‐Autistic Individuals: An Event‐Related Potential (ERP) Study

open access: yesAutism Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Syntactic processing in both language and music involves combining elements—such as words or chords—into coherent structures. The Shared Syntactic Integration Resource Hypothesis (SSIRH) was introduced based on observations of similar neural responses to syntactic violations across both domains.

Vocabulary and the Brain: Evidence from Neuroimaging Studies [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
In summary of the research findings presented in this paper, various brain regions are correlated with vocabulary and vocabulary acquisition. Semantic associations for vocabulary seem to be located near brain areas that vary according to the type of vocabulary, e.g. ventral temporal regions important for words for things that can be seen.

MEDVOC: Vocabulary Adaptation for Fine-tuning Pre-trained Language Models on Medical Text Summarization [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Thirty-Third International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence Main Track (IJCAI 2024). Pages 6180-6188
This work presents a dynamic vocabulary adaptation strategy, MEDVOC, for fine-tuning pre-trained language models (PLMs) like BertSumAbs, BART, and PEGASUS for improved medical text summarization. In contrast to existing domain adaptation approaches in summarization, MEDVOC treats vocabulary as an optimizable parameter and optimizes the PLM vocabulary ...

Multisensory Integration of Naturalistic Speech and Gestures in Autistic Adults

open access: yesAutism Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Seeing the speaker often facilitates auditory speech comprehension through audio‐visual integration. This audio‐visual facilitation is stronger under challenging listening conditions, such as in real‐life social environments. Autism has been associated with atypicalities in integrating audio‐visual information, potentially underlying social ...

Early exposure to flame retardants is prospectively associated with anxiety symptoms in adolescents: A prospective birth cohort study

open access: yesDepression and Anxiety, Volume 39, Issue 12, Page 780-793, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Background Anxiety disorders emerge during childhood and adolescence and are frequently preceded by subsyndromal anxiety symptoms. Environmental toxicants, including gestational polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) exposure, are associated with neuropsychiatric sequelae; however, the role of PBDEs as risk factors for anxiety in adolescence is ...

Longitudinal Speech Recognition in Noise in Children: Effects of Hearing Status and Vocabulary

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2019
Objectives: The aims of the current study were: (1) to compare growth trajectories of speech recognition in noise for children with normal hearing (CNH) and children who are hard of hearing (CHH) and (2) to determine the effects of auditory access ...

Neural Response Generation with Dynamic Vocabularies [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
We study response generation for open domain conversation in chatbots. Existing methods assume that words in responses are generated from an identical vocabulary regardless of their inputs, which not only makes them vulnerable to generic patterns and irrelevant noise, but also causes a high cost in decoding.

Prospective associations of text‐message‐based sentiment with symptoms of depression, generalized anxiety, and social anxiety

open access: yesDepression and Anxiety, Volume 39, Issue 12, Page 794-804, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Objective Language patterns may elucidate mechanisms of mental health conditions. To inform underlying theory and risk models, we evaluated prospective associations between in vivo text messaging language and differential symptoms of depression, generalized anxiety, and social anxiety. Methods Over 16 weeks, we collected outgoing text messages
