Quantifying and analyzing rock trait distributions of rocky fault scarps using deep learning approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
We apply a deep learning model to segment and identify rock characteristics based on a Structure-from-Motion orthomap and digital elevation model of a rocky fault scarp in the Volcanic Tablelands, eastern California. By post-processing the deep learning results, we build a semantic rock map and analyze rock trait distributions.

Bio-oil production via fast pyrolysis of cassava residues combined with ethanol and volcanic rock in a free-fall reactor

open access: yesCogent Engineering, 2023
Pyrolysis of waste biomass to produce usable energy has the potential to, in part, alleviate the consumption of limited fossil fuel resources. We describe bio-oil production via fast pyrolysis of cassava residues, a mostly wasted byproduct of cassava ...

Chemical classification of common volcanic rocks based on degree of silica saturation and CaO/K2O ratio

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2021
Modal classifications of common volcanic rocks are expensive, difficult, or impossible to attain. As a consequence, these rocks are classified using the chemical composition.

Retracted: Can the chemical industry solve the climate change? On the role of human energy production, renewable energies, and the potential of chemistry as a solution provider

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView., 2023
Let us consider an alternative perspective on climate change: The sum of solar radiation and heat generated by human activity result in a net energy input of 1.96 times that of the Sun on the Earth's surface. The expanding global population is expected to exacerbate this issue. Potential solutions are proposed, including replacement and heat recycling.

The evolution of pore connectivity in volcanic rocks [PDF]

open access: yesEarth and Planetary Science Letters, 2017
Pore connectivity is a measure of the fraction of pore space (vesicles, voids or cracks) in a material that is interconnected on the system length scale. Pore connectivity is fundamentally related to permeability, which has been shown to control magma outgassing and the explosive potential of magma during ascent in the shallowest part of the crust ...

Canadian contributions to environmetrics

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Statistics, Volume 50, Issue 4, Page 1355-1386, December 2022., 2022
Abstract This article focuses on the importance of collaboration in statistics by Canadian researchers and highlights the contributions that Canadian statisticians have made to many research areas in environmetrics. We provide a discussion about different vehicles that have been developed for collaboration by Canadians in the environmetrics context as ...
