A non-destructive gamma-ray spectrometry was applied to a number of volcanic products from Japan. Considerable amounts of 137Cs (∼10-13Ci/g) were determined in some volcanic rocks. The presence of 137Cs does not appear to have any relation to the type, age and spatial distribution of the volcanic rocks.

Geomechanical characterization of volcanic rocks using empirical systems and data mining techniques
This paper tries to characterize volcanic rocks through the development and application of an empirical geomechanical system. Geotechnical information was collected from the samples from several Atlantic Ocean islands including Madeira, Azores and ...

Method of identifying and characterizing of volcanic traps and its application
Volcanic rocks were widely developed in sedimentary basins in China. The Songliao, Junggar and Sichuan basins have got great research successes and exploration discoveries in igneous reservoirs, which have become one of the important fields for oil and ...

Ancient Australian Rocks and the Search for Life on Mars [PDF]
We discuss the results of a remote sensing study that has revealed new details about an important rock unit dominated by two minerals that can be associated with volcanism (olivine) and life (carbonate). The study, which used a new analysis technique on CRISM data, identified a region where no carbonates or clays are present, only large grain size ...

Mercury's crustal thickness correlates with lateral variations in mantle melt production [PDF]
Mercury's crust has a complex structure resulting from a billion years of volcanism. The surface variations in chemical composition have been identified from orbit by the spacecraft MESSENGER. Combining these measurements with laboratory experiments on partial melting, we estimate which variations in surface density and degree of mantle melting are ...

Andisols is a variable charge soil where fertilizations to the soil do not give the same result as that to the soils with permanent charges. Therefore, amelioration is needed to improve the soil chemical properties.

Arsenic is a naturally occurring trace element that causes many health effects when present in drinking water. Elevated arsenic concentrations in water are often attributed to nearby felsic volcanic sequences; however, the specific rock units to which ...

Abstract The outcomes of species interactions can vary greatly in time and space with the outcomes of some interactions determined by priority effects. On coral reefs, benthic algae rapidly colonize disturbed substrate. In the absence of top‐down control from herbivorous fishes, these algae can inhibit the recruitment of reef‐building corals, leading ...
