Isogeny volcanoes [PDF]

open access: yesThe Open Book Series, 2013
The remarkable structure and computationally explicit form of isogeny graphs of elliptic curves over a finite field has made them an important tool for computational number theorists and practitioners of elliptic curve cryptography. This expository paper recounts the theory behind these graphs and examines several recently developed algorithms that ...

Debris-flow monitoring on volcanoes via a novel usage of a laser rangefinder

open access: yesJournal of Applied Volcanology
Mount Rainier has had at least 11 large lahars over the last 6,000 years, including one occurring without evidence of eruptive activity. This prompted the creation of a lahar detection system that uses a combination of seismic, infrasound, and tripwires.

Microbial exopolysaccharide production by polyextremophiles in the adaptation to multiple extremes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Polyextremophiles are microorganisms that endure multiple extreme conditions by various adaptation strategies that also include the production of exopolysaccharides (EPSs). This review provides an integrated perspective on EPS biosynthesis, function, and regulation in these organisms, emphasizing their critical role in survival and highlighting their ...

Following the tug of the audience from complex to simplified hazards maps at Cascade Range volcanoes

open access: yesJournal of Applied Volcanology
Volcano-hazard maps are broadly recognized as important tools for forecasting and managing volcanic crises and for disseminating spatial information to authorities and people at risk.

Visions of Volcanoes

open access: yes19: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Long Nineteenth Century, 2017
The long nineteenth century marked an important transition in the understanding of the nature of combustion and fire, and of volcanoes and the interior of the earth. It was also a period when dramatic eruptions of Vesuvius lit up the night skies of Naples, providing ample opportunities for travellers, natural philosophers, and early geologists to get ...

C9orf72 ALS‐causing mutations lead to mislocalization and aggregation of nucleoporin Nup107 into stress granules

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mutations in the C9orf72 gene represent the most common genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease. Using patient‐derived neurons and C. elegans models, we find that the nucleoporin Nup107 is dysregulated in C9orf72‐associated ALS. Conversely, reducing Nup107 levels mitigates disease‐related changes.

Monitoring eruption activity using temporal stress changes at Mount Ontake volcano

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Volcanic activity is often accompanied by small earthquakes, with focal mechanisms indicating stress state beneath volcanoes. Here, the authors demonstrate that quantitative evaluation of temporal stress changes is an effective tool for eruption ...
