Esophagectomy for esophageal carcinoma is one of most demanding and traumatic surgical procedures undertaken in general surgery. Postoperative morbidity and mortality are usually high; nevertheless better outcomes have been noted in some high-volume specialized centers [1, 2, 3, 4], with reported death rates of 1–3%.
