Estimation of bole volume by importance sampling
Canadian Journal of Forest Research, 1986A sampling methodology to provide an unbiased estimate of bole volume is introduced, with specific regard to its incorporation as an alternative to detailed dendrometry in a 3P sampling framework. In a demonstration of the technique to estimate merchantable volume in a 91-tree population, the average relative sampling error was 7.4%.

Estimation of Log Volume by Importance Sampling
Forest Science, 1986Abstract Importance sampling is proposed as a technique for estimating log volume that eliminates the bias of conventional methods arising from irregular log taper. In a trial of the technique, the average relative sampling error for individual logs, based on a measurement of one cross-section per log, was 5.2%.

The importance of volume of blood cultured in the detection of bacteremia and fungemia
Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Disease, 1983An analysis was made on the basis of 5,389 isolates from 5,008 positive blood cultures of the relative yields from 10, 20, and 30 ml of blood. Average yields from cultures of 20 and 30 ml of blood were, respectively, 38 and 61% greater than that from 10 ml of blood.
