Voluntary running exercise modifies astrocytic population and features in the peri-infarct cortex
Rehabilitative exercise following a brain stroke has beneficial effects on the morphological plasticity of neurons. Particularly, voluntary running exercise after focal cerebral ischemia promotes functional recovery and ameliorates ischemia-induced ...

Exercise-induced respiratory muscle fatigue: implications for performance [PDF]
It is commonly held that the respiratory system has ample capacity relative to the demand for maximal O-2 and CO2 transport in healthy humans exercising near sea level.

Voluntary exercise enables stress resistance in females
Stress-related disorders are more common in females than males. This difference could arise from differential responses to behavioral interventions that enable stress resistance between sexes. In male rats, regular physical activity prevents the behavioral consequences of uncontrollable stress, such as social avoidance and exaggerated fear conditioning.

Effects of diet and/or exercise in enhancing spinal cord sensorimotor learning. [PDF]
Given that the spinal cord is capable of learning sensorimotor tasks and that dietary interventions can influence learning involving supraspinal centers, we asked whether the presence of omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and the curry spice ...

The Effect of Voluntary Exercise and Prenatal Exposure to Sodium Valproate on Learning, Memory, and Anxiety of Rats’ Offspring [PDF]
Background: Antiepileptic drugs, such as sodium valproate (SV), are teratogenic as their usage by the pregnant mother has been associated with an increased risk of major congenital abnormalities in the fetus.

Testosterone Combined with Voluntary Exercise Attenuates Diabetes-induced Pancreatic Apoptosis in Castrated Diabetic Rats Induced by HFD/STZ [PDF]
Increased apoptosis in the pancreas and beta cell death causes reduced insulin secretion in type 2 diabetes. This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of exercise training and testosterone administration on apoptosis marker (p53 protein) in the ...

Mesolimbic transcriptional response to hedonic substitution of voluntary exercise and voluntary ethanol consumption [PDF]
The mesolimbic dopaminergic pathway has been implicated in many rewarding behaviors, including the consumption of ethanol and voluntary exercise. It has become apparent that different rewarding stimuli activate this pathway, and therefore it is possible for these behaviors to influence each other, i.e. hedonic substitution.

Systemic Exercise-Induced Hypoalgesia Following Isometric Exercise Reduces Conditioned Pain Modulation [PDF]
Objective Physically active individuals show greater conditioned pain modulation (CPM) compared with less active individuals. Understanding the effects of acute exercise on CPM may allow for a more targeted use of exercise in the management of pain. This

Examination of the Monoamine Oxidase A Gene Promoter on Motivation to Exercise and Levels of Voluntary Physical Activity [PDF]
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the genetic basis underlying voluntary exercise. Monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) is an enzyme that acts on monoamine neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, to cause inactivation. There are several polymorphisms
