Perceived importance and didactic difficulty of chemistry education: Insights from Czech teachers

open access: yesThe Curriculum Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract This empirical study examines how chemistry teachers in lower and upper secondary schools in the Czech Republic evaluate the content of the chemistry curriculum, focussing on its perceived importance and didactic difficulty. Based on a quantitative survey (N = 146), the study provides insight into the pedagogical content knowledge of ...

Fish Scales: A Multifunctional Biomaterial from Nature

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Fish scales demonstrate nature's solution to impact protection through overlapping multilayered architecture. This biological design combines mineralized surfaces with collagen networks to achieve both flexibility and fracture resistance. The structural principles inspire advanced protective materials and biomedical implants, where damage tolerance ...

Insights to Industrial Electrocatalytic Sulfide Oxidation: Electrode Fabrication, System Engineering, and High‐Value Product Acquisition

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
This review summarizes recent advances in electrocatalytic sulfide oxidation (SOR), focusing on catalyst design strategies, reaction system engineering, and pathways for high‐value product generation. The roles of different reduced sulfur species (S2−, HS−, H2S) under various industrial conditions are highlighted, along with approaches to enhance ...

Lower nitrogen leaching from struvite than monoam monium phosphate is more size-dependent than phosphorus leaching

open access: yesGeoderma
The use of wastewater-derived struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) as a lower water solubility alternative to highly water-soluble phosphorus (P) fertilizers such as monoammonium phosphate (MAP) has been widely hypothesized to reduce fertilizer nitrogen (N) and ...

Waste to Hydrogen: Transforming Food Waste Into Biohythane (Bio‐H2 + Bio‐CH4) in a Two‐Stage Reactor With the Aid of a Metal‐Ion Catalyst

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates a two‐stage catalytic bioreactor system that converts real food waste into high‐purity biohydrogen and biohythane. In Stage‐1, an enriched Clostridium thermocellum culture combined with Ni2+─Fe2+ bimetallic catalysis enhances hydrolysis efficiency and hydrogenase activity, resulting in a 77% increase in H2 yield and 75.8% purity

Development of a Zebrafish Embryo‐Based Test System for Thyroid Hormone System Disruption: 3Rs in Ecotoxicological Research

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology and Chemistry, EarlyView.
Abstract There is increasing concern regarding pollutants disrupting the vertebrate thyroid hormone (TH) system, which is crucial for development. Thus, identification of TH system–disrupting chemicals (THSDCs) is an important requirement in the Organisation for Economic Co‐operation and Development (OECD) testing framework.

Effects of Different Irrigation Rates and Microbial Fertilizers on Inter-Root Soil Environment and Yield and Quality of Brassica chinensis L.

open access: yesHorticulturae
Brassica chinensis L. is often grown using ‘excessive water and fertilizer’, which has a negative impact on the inter-root soil environment and the yield and quality of the plant. As the concept of green and sustainable development takes root in people’s
